    Vegetable Oil Off The Shelf

Thanks for the responses guys. It seems like fuel lubricity isn’t really an issue as long as you’re getting some percentage of biodiesel at the pump. I’m a pretty infrequent user of this IDI and still relatively new to it. I’ll take a closer look at the pumps and not worry too much about it!

    Vegetable Oil Off The Shelf

A while ago I came across this lubricity study, which I guess has become rather famous in these circles: https://www.dieselplace.com/threads/lubricity-additive-study-results.177728/ Interesting that the winner by a considerable margin is soy biodiesel. The sole diesel engine I use currently...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Thanks for the ebay link guys. The pictures are all the same as the Amazon listing I bought from except for the last picture, which warns that other sellers have plagiarized his instructions while selling the wrong tool. Looks like I fell victim to the counterfeiting scam. I left a bad review...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I’m happy to report that I got the truck running today. After cleaning all of the debris off of the solenoids, a buzz test showed only 5 of 8 injectors buzzing strong. I measured clearance on a couple of injectors and found them at the very bottom end of spec or below spec, so I decided to...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I have a better update than the last. I found some videos over the weekend suggesting that injectors whose armature to poppet body clearance has fallen below spec due to wear sometimes have stiction issues due to the oil in that small gap creating a suction effect which the magnetic force of the...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Ok, I figured out why I am only seeing 50v. Looked in the manual for the scope and max input voltage is +/-5v. Using a 10:1 attenuator probe, that means I am just seeing maximum voltage. I ordered another attenuator to put in series. Stay tuned for what voltage looks like accurately measured!

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I repeated the buzz test today. I wanted to make doubly sure that the injectors have enough voltage to fire. I unplugged the number 8 injector connector and inserted pins into the plug. It’s pretty tight to try to backprobe a high voltage wire there without touching the pins together. While...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Truck has about 200,000 miles on it. I have zero clue about what maintenance was performed on the truck. Possibly not much, if the oil sludge that came out of it is any indication. I will try the other IDM I have and redo the buzz test.

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I do not have a good injector, could possibly get one but that would require pulling one out of a friend’s van. I’d prefer not to have to do this but I will keep the suggestion in mind. It has been very warm here too. Some days when we tried to start it it was close to 100 degrees. Also tried a...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

The guy in this example says that with a buzz this quiet, the truck will not start cold at all—the block heater must be plugged in to get it to fire. I am thinking the injectors in my buzz test sounded more like the bad test in that video. I think a next easy test to do would be to pop the...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

The injectors all sound very much alike, however I think they may be very quiet compared to a strong engine. I intended to do this test on my friend’s Powerstroke today as well, but his truck would not connect to the scan tool.

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I took a video of the injector buzz test today. This is with the valve covers off. It’s about 90 degrees today.

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I am checking the voltage at the injector connector, with the connector disconnected from the injector, positive probe on the white wire, negative probe on the black wire. The result I got was generally reminiscent of a +50v spike followed by -50v. The results were similar with both IDMs...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I have not but that is first on my list of things to look at before looking at fuel supply further. The video you posted of where the oil comes out was very helpful. If I do not have oil at the injectors, given that I have good ICP and a good pulse from the IDM, would that indicate failed...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

After an improved compression test, numbers are up around 300 psi. Not great, but should be able to fire I imagine. The search continues. Going to start evaluating the fuel system for air.

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Upon examining my gauge setup, the quick connect fitting was not fitting snugly and was leaking. Test to be repeated with new quick connect and check valve.

    Slow crank after possible overheat

I did another compression test today. Pulled all glow plugs (except for one which is bent over, not allowing the socket to slip onto it. I have no idea how it might have gotten this way). I am using a Harbor Freight compression tester as a base. I have a M10x1.0 ORB fitting, 18” grease whip...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Thanks, that video is a huge help. I think I will be able to get a good look at the spouts next time we crank it.

Is my ICP sensor bad? Do I have low or high ICP?

No change with the good IDM. I believe I misinterpreted the voltage my scope was showing earlier. Good IDM showed a similar wave form. Captures from IDMs 1 and 2 are attached. One vertical square is equal to 50v. These readings are taken at the injector connector. Do these pulses look adequate...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Mechanical gauge shows you've got plenty of psi to fire the injectors...so.... WTS light comes on just for a second. I believe there is an oil temp fault possibly messing with the glow plug system. There is an electrical pulse to the injector. I thought the wave form looked a little sketchy...

Is my ICP sensor bad? Do I have low or high ICP?

I just hooked my scope up to a 12v battery. Pulses are the same height, approximately, as those in the screenshot I posted, with the same range settings. So the injectors are only getting 12v maximum from the IDM. Looks like we found our problem. Will swap with the other IDM ASAP and report back.

Is my ICP sensor bad? Do I have low or high ICP?

I’m also reading that the IDM kicks the voltage up to 100+ DC volts. That would make sense too, but in that case I’m not sure what’s up with my up-down pulse. I will try to get a good picture of what is going on with those injector pulses. Maybe I can get a good capture and zero in on them...

Is my ICP sensor bad? Do I have low or high ICP?

It’s also not much of a consistent pulse, is it? By the way, I did test fuel pressure at one of the bowl plugs today. 64 psi dropping to 60 psi while cranking. Someone suggested pulling the fuel line to the rail and checking for pressure at the rail. Think that’s worth doing?

Is my ICP sensor bad? Do I have low or high ICP?

Ah! Interesting! I set the range for 50v in that shot. I’m still getting used to my scope, so I’m not sure if it’s showing -50 to 50 or -25 to 25. I assumed -25 to 25, thinking those would be 12v pulses. I did wonder why the pulse went up and down—AC would explain it! At any rate, what you’re...

    Slow crank after possible overheat

Fuel looked ok-ish, but there was a good amount of rusty stuff in it. I am not sure if this came from the tank or from the little metal tube that runs down from the fuel bowl drain.
