Earlier you mentioned the fan clutch being bad. That, of course, could cause overheating. Does the fan roar like a tornado when the gauge shows hot? If not, it's not working.
Just read the last page in this. When the rental timing units were first going around I timed my three idi's @ about 10 degrees advance w/one
@ 10.5. That was 5-8 yrs. ago, no problems. I do, however, have egt gauges and don't do peddle to the metal towing. All three are tidi and
a joy to drive.
While a can't remember the brand my manually operated glow time is 3 seconds in the summer and 5 in the dead of winter. Always starts. Came to those numbers by glowing them out of the engine and that is
what it took to get red.
Probably depends a lot on your use. Running lite w/little or no towing or extended periods of foot in the fan.
My '94 IDI is stock except the 3" aftermarket stuff on the turbo and a little more fuel. Set it at 10.5* years ago and enjoy the snappy accel.
