    Glow plugs not clicking

Is it a problem if my glow plug controller doesn't start clicking after the WTS light goes off? It used to.The plugs seem to be working and the WTS light stays on for about 20 seconds. It's hard to tell if everything is as strong as it should be because it's a 30 year old diesel and it's winter...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

The shop that did my turbo and exhaust while looking for my EGT problem suggested the straight pipe for the best flow. The way I drive it's not really an issue. I like the sound but still might add something to tone it down a bit once I get the EGT problem dealt with. I haven't been pulled over...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks! The turbo and 4" exhaust are new so I think they are flowing fine. I have no muffler, should I consider one? I don't really believe that is an issue because this problem started with my old stock exhaust. I will look into a cold air intake and intercooler - any suggestions for good ones...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Is anyone still looking at this thread? Even though it is better, I'm still having troubles. My EGT's still spike too high when I go uphill or tow a load. I have the pump timing set and the fuel backed off to where it has noticeably less power. It still gets high and I still end up in 2nd or 3rd...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks. I think I'll back off a little more and keep EGT's out of the equation a little more. I'm more concerned about keeping the motor safe than how fast I can get up the pass. I kind of think that once the EGT is lower I won't have to back off the throttle as much and will probably pick up...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Big difference! Backing off the fuel stopped the black smoke and helped with the EGT's. They still climb high enough that I have to back off when I really put my foot in it though. Is that just something I have to live with or do I keep tuning? In a gas engine, I would keep leaning it until is...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

My timing was a few degrees retarded and is now a degree or 2 advanced but seems to run better. I just finished backing off the fuel screw one flat of an allen wrench and will see how it does. My turbo is brand new, pyrometer about a year old, so hopefully they are good. Thanks for all of the help!

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks guys! My EGT's are a little better and power is better with new timing setting. I'll back off the fuel screw and see what happens. I think I'll keep playing it safe and at least put the air cleaner partly back on. I'm working in my driveway, surrounded by trees

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks! I messed with it yesterday and, aside from some cussing caused by touching hot parts, it went pretty well. I started out at 6 degrees, bumped it once and ended up at 14 - it's sensitive! Backed it off and found that I was at 10. By then it was almost time for hockey to come on, so I left...

Wait, I just looked back and you answered this already! I'll bump it toward the passenger side and check again

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Big Bart, are you around? I finally got all the equipment I needed and just checked my timing. It looks like I'm currently set at 6 degrees at 2000 rpm. Which way should I turn the pump and how far do I move it to go the 2 degrees? To confirm, the mark on the plate is next to the short tube near...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks, I will. It will probably be after the holidays since I need to spend money on others right now.

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

Thanks! My boost was very low and is running around 6-7 now so that seems right. I already have the right wrenches for the IP from when I replaced that a few years ago. Even after a few years of asking around I have not been able to find someone willing or able to help me with timing. If they...

Timing issue on a 7.3 IDI

I have been looking for info on timing adapters and maybe this post answers it. It sounds like one of these adapters is adequate for me to check and set my timing myself? I recently had a bunch of work done to my truck (first time I have had anyone other than me work on it!) and part of my...
