Could it be the glow plug selonoid?

So I tried jumping across the solenoid just to take the solenoid out of the equation and no difference, even jumped direct from the battery. The harness is two years old with new connectors to match the bosch plugs, tested to make sure voltage is getting to plugs. IDIBRONCO,I didn't mix and...

Could it be the glow plug selonoid?

Been fighting this smoky startup (bad) for awhile on my "86" 6.9 f350. I'm on a manual switch, last week I pulled the glows out and I had 5 bad ones, they were only 1.5 years old with 5000 miles on them, they were Beru. I needed to get the truck going to deliver some wood. I could only find AC...

Any concern with these compression numbers?

Forgot to answer the question on timing. I couldn't find anyone local that could time it, they all said they just go by ear, so I studied it a bit and that's what I did, I advanced it just enough to be a little noisy and it ran great, over time it has quieted down considerably.

Any concern with these compression numbers?

Nero, I bought the injectors and pump from Oregon fuel injection, they're Stanadyne. I've always ran their additive. The truck always got 10 mpg, after the replacements it went to a solid 12, it's only used to carry a 12 ft camper with a small trailer. My last trip this fall I noticed the...

Any concern with these compression numbers?

I've owned this 86 f350 dually 6.9 since about 1990, not sure of the miles because the daughter of the original owner said her dad had disconnected the odometer. I'm guessing 250-275000. It's been running great but smoking bad on cold startups but starts easily. I replaced the injectors/injector...

    Ninth Glow Plug

Just thought I'd give an update before this thread completely dies off. I've been living with the 9th GP for a week now and I absolutely love it, I glow until the very tip starts glowing and the glow will then start running up the one inch long electrode, when it gets about 3/4 of the way up it...

    Ninth Glow Plug

Good Question, There's an aluminum frame that houses two gauges, the exhaust temp and the turbo boost, that's mounted low on the dash, behind the plastic dash is a large steel plate (factory) that it bolts to. I had a large lug that came out of an electric panel that was sized for 00, the GP...

    Ninth Glow Plug

So I went ahead and installed a ninth GP on the dash this afternoon. I hooked it direct to the GP solenoid and used 10 gauge because the run was a little longer, the others are on 12Gauge. I had bought 8 knew GP's and installed them so I used one of the five good old ones for the dash mount...

    Ninth Glow Plug

Thanks for the reply's, like others stated I give it a second or third shot just to cut down on the smoke, I think I may be too worried about burning the glow plugs and don't glow long enough on the first glow, it starts pretty good but smokes and runs rough, I watch the smoke though the mirror...

    Ninth Glow Plug

I remember reading some time ago where a guy wired a 9th GP on the dash inside the cab so he could see how hot they were getting. I've been using a manual button for several years and I like it, but I just pulled the GPs and had three bad ones. I am careful not to glow too long, 8 never over 10...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

As long as the glow plugs are working it starts fine, just smokes too much on start, engine temp stays good, after I changed out the IP and injectors 13000 miles ago my mileage went from always 10 to a solid 12 with my 12ft. camper and small trailer and the power improved. The only thing that...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

So I plugged it in this morning for three hours, it started fine but still smoked more than usual for being plugged in. I ran it down the road five miles and got up to temperature (195). I never heard the timing advance kick out, usually it's very obvious. When I got back I jumped a wire from...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

So I shortened the wire by 4 feet and got a reading of 8.3 volts, held the button for 3 minutes and starting was the same, no noticeable change, fast start, just too much smoke. So I plugged it in for 7 hours(forgot about it) the engine was warm to touch, I glowed for 30 seconds and no change...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

Thanks Bart, yesterday I left them on for 3 minutes, then afterburn for at least 20 sec., (7.95volt)started fast but smoked about the same as the day before at 30 seconds, almost acceptable. I haven't gone out this morning, I'll check to see if the plugs survived the longer burn and then shorten...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

Here's an update on what I've been experimenting with. I couldn't get the 6 volt battery's to charge so I took a 60 foot piece of braded # 12 wire and hooked one end to the glow plug harness and the other end to the glow plug solenoid, pulled one plug and clamped it to the engine block so I...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

Thanks everyone. Bart, I replaced pumps, injectors, returns, about 25k ago and I never let my exhaust temp needle touch the 1000 mark, I shift and enjoy the scenery. The advance works fine, very annoying until it pops off, usually a mile or so (slightly downhill). I do worry about those...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

Thanks for the replies, I'm researching and reading about the bosch plugs, that could be worth a try. It's fun to think out of the box a little and that's why I'm asking these questions. "what were you thinking"? well electrical is my weak spot for sure so I was hoping someone with more wisdom...

    Glow Plug Idea Question

I've owned this 86 f350 6.9 for about 30 years. I always seem to be fighting with hard, smoky starts. I went to manual button 5 years ago and it's been better. I run the plugs for 8 seconds and then crank, I always feel like it needs more but I'm so afraid that I will burn them that I just let...

    Complete electrical failure

I think I solved the problem! Riphip and cdx825 you led me to it. At first inspection everything on the passenger side fender, the big yellow and the split into the fusable links looked good, but it made since that it had to be in that area. So I pulled the battery and moved some things around...

    Complete electrical failure

Thanks cdx825, that would be fuses L and M that Franklin referred to. I probably need to open up the wires from those fuses down to the solenoid and look for damage, Thanks

    Complete electrical failure

Riphip, I could only find one large yellow connector and it looked good. Franklin, yes, disconnect the wire with the j fuse and it mimics my problem ,it's hard to know which one is M, there are several in a bundle in that area. these fuses look clean with no heat discolor. Would that fuse go...

    Complete electrical failure

Thanks idibronco On mine the always hot stud on the solenoid acts as a connector for several wires including the wire that seems to power everything up, your comment did prompt me to look deeper for loose grounds, only thing I found was a small wire going to ground under the dash that had been...

    Complete electrical failure

The only fusible link I can find is on the wire coming off the selonoid, it's the type that is a little sealed green box and says "fusible link" on it's top. I thought these were either good or bad, is it possible for one to work intermittently??That wire does appear to feed everything because...

    Complete electrical failure

I have a f350, 1986,crewcab,manual trans, 6.9. Just drove 450 miles to my hunting camp, parked for four days, went to leave and everything was dead, like a dead battery, but the batteries were good, messed with it for an hour and then suddenly power came back on. I fired it up and got about ten...

    Grinding shift, Now gone?

Thanks for the input, I know the fluid was up because I checked it the night before and it hadn't moved all winter, I also checked it after this episode. I'm more inclined to go with a broken rivet getting hung up and causing drag on the clutch. The clutch does shake a lot on take off, this...
