Are you running svo? If so, definitely a warm coolant circulator. Enviofuel.com has a kit. Otherwise, a block heater is likely cheaper. I imagine you could even get one at a junkyard.
Check all the connections at the wiring harness on the alternator. Those wires are easy to crush when you're poking around in the engine compartment. It could be that the sheath is melted, wires are cracked, etc.
