7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

Thanks for the help guys. I dropped the heads off to the machinist this morning. God only knows when I will get them back as he is swamped with work. In the meantime, I have a ton of other stuff to do on the truck, not to mention getting the block cleaned up and head bolt holes chased.

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

The new intake valve arrived in the mail today. Removed the old valve, cleaned up the seat and brushed a LIGHT coat of prussian blue on the seat. Inserted the new valve in the head, held it against the seat with light finger pressure and turned it. and this is what I got-a nice even...

I have the replacement valve (NOS OEM) ordered and it may get here as soon as Saturday. Once it arrives, I will check the valve to seat fit and see what I find. I already have the prussian blue on hand. Maybe I get luckyLOL

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

Thanks, Knuckledragger. I am still thinking I am gong to have to take the heads to a shop. I don't have the knowledge or experience with regard to replacing that one valve and making sure the valve to seat fit is correct. I understand lapping the valve to the seat but have never actually done...

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

Thanks, Al. I don't think the heads need a valve grind as there is only 108k on the clock now. I wanted to replace the valve seals and springs while I had the heads off, although they may not really need replacing. However, the truck used to sit a lot when the Air Force had it, so the valve...

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

The valve stem replacement looks simple, but calls for two special tools: a valve seal installer T83T-6571-A and a "plastic valve seal guide". There are a couple of valve seal installers listed on e-bay now, but would a deep well socket work for this? The plastic guide has no specs in the manual...

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

I called one machine shop and the owner said it would be a month before he could look at the heads. He does a lot of truck and tractor pull work, and with it being pulling season, I can certainly understand that. I have a couple of other shops to call, but being as the truck was running fine, I...

Okay, been away for a week for the wedding of my Wife's niece in upstate New York. Of course, we did not take the truck but took the Wife's '08 Ford Edge. AC worked great, and it needed to with two dogs in the car - don't want them to do any "heavy-breathing" from being overheated. Drive was...

Here is pic of the tip of the rocker that corresponds with that ugly valve tip. There does appear to be bit of a "ridge" on the tip. The rocker in question is on the right in the pic.

Thanks, Russ. I will see if I can post up a pic of that rocker. The tip looked okay to me, but what do i know? The heads are going to the shop so I will have the machinist check it out.

By the way, I have a complete set of 34 - 7.3 headbolts just removed. Seem like they are still in decent shape. I am putting in studs so don't need 'em. If anybody wants 'em I will give 'em to ya - just pay the shipping.

Thanks, Al. Already have run a coolant filter for along time. The vinegar would probably be more gentle on the gaskets than the Restore Plus. How much vinegar do you usually put in the 8 gallon system?

Okay, so teardowns always bring about the need for parts inspection, and my heads will going to the machine shop so for cleaning, inspection, new valve stem seals and new OEM valve springs, and whatever else the machinist may find needs to be done (hopefully not much as the engine only has 108K...

7.3 Head Gasket Replacement-ARP Head Stud Install

Thanks, Al. Unfortunately, the way I go about my work is in my driveway as I don't have a garage. And even if I did I probably wouldn't be able to get the CC all the way in anyway. I also have limited "tooling", but am acquiring more all the time. The main point I want to make is that these old...

Yep, tried that and that kept the hook even farther away. The front tires are too big - they would have to come off to allow the hoist to get close enough.

Valvetrain nicely organized in its own covered container. The arm on the cherry picker isn't quite long enough to get it centered over the heads Because of the deer basher bumper I have. I will have figure something else out when the the heads go back on. Maybe attach a longer arm on the...

Finally started the teardown. The first item to go was the cheesy dealer installed AC system. Look at all the room now that the AC plenum is removed! Note the aluminum tape over the ports to inside the cab - gotta keep the little critters out of the cab. After the front serpentine...

what does it take to put ac in?

Reading through the Haynes AC manual helped me a lot. I didn't really have a clue how the automotive AC worked, or know how to repair the system. Between the manual and the help from the folks on this site, I think I can get the AC in my truck working right.

what does it take to put ac in?

Russ, I sure wish I could take advantage of your generous offer and have you help me install my AC too. It might take me "a few hours" to drive from WI to OR though. Plus, I just about have the heads off!

what does it take to put ac in?

At this point, I would recommend you purchase an AC manual. I have the Haynes AC manual no. 10425. I think I purchased it at O'Reilly's. Even though the manual is a bit "generic", it will help you understand automotive AC and help you understand what it will take to get the system repaired and...

what does it take to put ac in?

I am working on doing this now on my truck. I am replacing the cheesy dealer AC with new OEM type components. As Russ mentions, you will need the engine side AC plenum in addition tot he other usual parts like condenser, hoses, accumulator, evaporator, orifice tube, orings, etc. The wiring...

AC Compressor replacement-correct oil and correct amount

So I will be replacing the dealer installed AC setup in my truck with OEM type components. I purchased a used engine side AC plenum as the dealer installed one was cheesy. The evaporator in the used plenum looks like new, and when I removed the orifice tube, it only had a couple of small...
