Not your Average Dana 60 Swap

I think that does it for the front axle, so I'll leave you with one last pic. New ride height: center of the hub to the fender lip is now about 24" (bad angle in the picture) Anyone out there with a stock height F350 4x4 that could get this dimension front and rear for comparison's sake?

Brake lines... I researched the hell out of this, then threw all that research out the window once I tore my truck apart. According to the all knowing Internet, my truck should have had 10mm x 1.0 nuts where the hard lines connect to the front rubber brake lines, but it did not. Everything...

Next up was the track bar. Without the track bar connected, you have to use something to secure the axle side to side, because with only the control arm bushings keeping the axle in place, something like a strong gust of wind just might blow the dang thing over. So I strapped the axle up...

Not your Average Dana 60 Swap

Now on to the actual swap: First thing was deconstructing the stock front suspension. Everything was unbolted, then I had to take off the bump stops, and the rear springs hanger for the front leaf springs off. These were riveted on. Then I spent 2 afternoons and no less than 2 gallons of...

Not your Average Dana 60 Swap

Last piece of the puzzle before I started the demolition process on the stock running gear. The 05+ steering box is a bolt in upgrade, just requiring a custom pressure line. I used my stock steering box (which actually came out of a 89 F250) along with switching to a 85.5-97 F350 pitman...

One last tidbit about the axle. The unit bearings for the 05+ axles are about 30% bigger than their 99-04 predecessors, so they are way less failure prone, but also $$$$ Some of the guys with superduty axles have subscribed to the method of pulling the ABS sensor out of the unit bearing...

I'm about to regurgitate a bunch of info, so someone correct me if I get anything wrong... Changes to the 08 axles (compared to the 05-07 version) In the front: Spring buckets have an extra lump on the back side of them; saw one guy used a hole saw to remove it, I just ground them down...

Not your Average Dana 60 Swap

Used the factory bar. So this is right after I drug the 08 axles home: Fast forward about 6 months, and after some fluffin' and buffin'... Along the way I had to acquire some parts. The 08 axles came with steering linkage, track bar, spring buckets, and a set of control arms...

Not your Average Dana 60 Swap

I'll start out with a little back story... My truck is one of the few years of F350 that didn't come with a Dana 60 from the factory. I've wanted to straight axle it since I got it, but had a hard time swallowing the investment of a Dana 60 when the end result would be a truck that still...

86 vs 87 crew cab doors...

the 83-86 rear crew cab doors are hard to find. The door shell itself looks to be the same, but the windows, window tracks, door panels, arm rest are different. Took me 2 years to find a set of beat to hell door panels, I had to make my own armrests. The interior latch is identical to one out...

    6.9/7.3 idi cylinder head question

I've seen this pop up a couple times, so I'll throw in my $.02 since I used to work at a machine shop that performed this operation; albeit for a different application. We were building blown alcy motors for drag cars and boats. Copper head gaskets, o-ringed block and heads. The BHJ tool was...

    In tank fuel pump?

Early 80's ford trucks with the carbureted 460's sometimes had this setup. My truck was one of them. The pumps themselves don't seem to be problematic, but the wiring to them is. They were switched on and off with the switch for the fuel selector valve, and went through an oil pressure switch...

    my rewiring thread

I did it this way too. I was rewiring everything when converting from gas, so it was just as easy putting them on their own switches. Glad I did. Cold start advance doesn't get used a whole lot, but I use the high idle all of the time.

    electric pump conversion question

I threw in a couple parts store in-line 3/8 clear fuel filters right before the tank selector valves. One on each of the supply lines from the 2 tanks. They're enough to keep any bigger chunks of garbage from getting into the fuel selecter valves or electric pump. Then just run a line up to...

Manual Selector Valves / Electric AND Mechanical fuel pumps

I've had people ask me about my fuel system, and have never started a post on it, just commented on others. So here we go; I have been running this setup for about 4 years now, and it still works perfect. I'm running a Carter P4070 electric fuel pump parallel to the stock mechanical fuel...

    Which turbo do I have?

Have the cowl built and ready to get welded to the hood, fabbed up the air box and 4" tubing: just waiting for a chance to pull the hood off. Don't have anything worth showing........yet. I'll start a thread once I get it all thrown together.

    Which turbo do I have?

Mine is a half assed mess right now. I'm in the middle of making a new one out of metal that is a cowl induction setup. I used a AFE filter on a handful of 3" ABS fittings, relocated the washer fluid reservoir, and had the filter sitting right behind the driver's side battery.

    Which turbo do I have?

This is about the 4th turbo setup I've seen like this - I have one too. Appears to be a 088 kit, but with the 085 air box. I'm thinking maybe when ATS first came out with the 088 kit, they used the older 085 air box? 10 psi sounds about right; if you want to hear the turbo whistle, throw...

    solid axel swap

You could just get the axle in, and worry about the vacuum hubs later. Hubs can still be engaged with manual lockouts in the meantime. They use a standard 12v vacuum pump, then go through a solenoid that supplies a 40 second high vacuum pulse to engage the hubs, or a 20 second low vacuum...

    Transfer case question

The slant nose t-case shifters that go through the removeable pan are a bit funky. I kept the 1345 but used the shifter, linkage and pan from my 89 donor truck. Just had to drill an extra hole in one piece of the linkage, and cut out the hole in the floor for the shifter. Another thing, I...
