    If your pump is sucking air, use a stethoscope with the probe removed so it is an open hose. That picks up the sound of air easily. With the pump running, go along all your lines. If there is a leak, it will be loud at the source.

    The spinning axles when 4wd is engaged makes the hubs lock. When the axles are not spinning, the spring disengages the hubs. Simple design, and if you keep it maintained it should be fine. Never had a problem with mine, and I use 4wd often on our ranch.

    Mine has the auto hubs. It seems like a simple design when I had it apart, so I would look into upgrading to that if I were you.

    Test your batteries separately in case you have a bad one. Check all connectors. If the prior owner was that bad, check everything. Never underestimate the power of stupidity.

    I don't have an auto, but I don't think your numbers are far off from what I would expect with your setup. RPM seems to kill mpg on the motors, so no OD is likely your problem.

    Be leery of work you are not paying for. Jack up the truck and check everything for yourself, as loose wheel bearings can make similar symptoms. It should be easy to diagnose.
