    Using a 6.9 head gasket on 7.3

Just to add relevant material to this, the September '87 Ford 7.3L Diesel Book (CGE-429) which highlighted the changed and difference from the 6.9L says: "The cylinder head lower corner coolant passages on the 7.3L have been plugged. This change is introduced to eliminate lower corner gasket...

Anyone use Water Wetter with SCA's?

I also have been using Royal Purple Ice with Fleet Charge. Really haven't noticed anything one way or another.

    Thickest Head Gaskets?

I agree 100% "aged" NOS head gaskets on IDIs are not usually a good thing. Head gaskets are one of the weak links for us and an area where corners are best not cut. The most modern ones are the best in every instance I am aware.

    Hp gains?

That's the one we know about. Very surprised, since it's so easy, that nobody else has done it? Wonder if there is more to the story?

    Hp gains?

And now you see the reality. IDIs are old tech and pound for pound, HP is pretty expensive. If you look at it beyond the prism of unconditional love, they are not Mr Spock's first logical choice for a cost effective diesel buildup. They were at one time but those days are gone. By the way, when...

    Hp gains?

200+/- 5 hp at the rear wheels is about 250 on the flywheel. Maybe a little more gets to the rear wheels with a manual vs an automatic. 300 at the rear wheels is pretty hard to achieve. Basically you hear a lot of talk about big numbers but IIRC, only one guy has produced a dyno sheet. Real...

    head cylinder rebuild questions

How did the check go? Did you do just one cylinder or more? Which cylinder did you do the test on , one with less recession or more? Finally, did you take pics?

coolant filter seems like a pita.

Oh, I'm all for SCAs and I am genetically pre-conditioned to accept all forms of filtration as good. If I told you some of what I have done in that regard, I would be blackmailed on the board. What saves me from a life of excess and filtration pedantry is that I am also a cheap bastard. I look...

coolant filter seems like a pita.

It was something I found in the mid '90s, I think at a Navistar dealer. Been long enough that I don't recall. When I hit the deer, I tried to find a replacement but couldn't.

    Operating Oil pressure?

The exact idle rpm would be in the service manual but a 50 rpm in either direction isn't going to make a huge difference in oil pressure. FYI, the idle speed is 675 rpm with an automatic in drive. That's about 750-800 or so in neutral.

Back on my "meds" maybe? ( ;< )

    Operating Oil pressure?

Yeah, there are HDEO 20W50 and they would be extremely shear resistant. Too thick for 95% of applications but very shear resistant. There are also some 15W50 HDEO. I remember once seeing a 25W60 on the market in Australia, I think. Those heavy oils are only useful in very hot climates or for...

coolant filter seems like a pita.

Well, nice to hear my logic passed first echelon review. Yeah, if you install once for cleaning up a new or rebuilt engine, why not keep it going? The major expense is the installation and once the system is clean, the filter probably don't need changing very often at all (if there is nothing to...

coolant filter seems like a pita.

God do I hate the term "cheap insurance!" Not singling you out for abuse here, Dunk, but often, it's just cover terminology for the wasteful, feel good things we do to our trucks without logical justification or a demonstrated need. Given the relatively low cost of adding a coolant filter, it's...

coolant filter seems like a pita.

I'm big into oil filtration but have never gone into the coolant side of it. Looking at things from both sides: Like enhanced oil filtration, at the end of the day, the difference in longevity between good STANDARD maintenance practice, i.e. regular service, is minimal and is often not...

Towing in Relation to Boost and EGT

Yes look for leaks, both on the exhaust and the compressed air side. I didn't properly retighten the intake hat to the intake manifold and it cut my boost in half. You could hear the leak, though, a kind of an extra roar. Didn't sound right and I went right back home Intake restriction (air...

    Any Y-pipe options?

Not sure. There really isn't a great spot, is there. They need to be up front as far as possible so you'd have to compromise somehow, perhaps by having a pipe bent to loop under something. Probably easiest to run twin pipes side by side up front, install an X and then run the pipes out to each...

    Any Y-pipe options?

Me too, but I would include a crossover pipe or X-pipe.

    head cylinder rebuild questions

Are not the factory manuals with detailed specifications "facts and proof?" Are not the AERA docs (which he may be subscribed to if he runs an auto machine shop) and other auto machine shop reference books "facts and proof?" I don't think anyone here is yanking stuff out of their rectums. We...

    head cylinder rebuild questions

Yeah, if the seat was not done much, then an extra-thick valve must be the culprit.. taking into account the 0.015" loss on the head thickness. Simple enough to correct; grind the valve face to achieve the correct recession, then grind the tip to set the mounted height... done. Eight valves. An...

    head cylinder rebuild questions

Lots of diesels have solid lifters. Both my tractor diesel do. I don't know if any solids were made that will fit the IDI. Remember this lifter was originally designed for the 5.7L Olds diesel and used also in the 6.2L GM before it appeared in the 6.9L. Some research may yield a solid...

    head cylinder rebuild questions

I measured crushed head gasket clearance on my old gasket to do my setup. It was 0.064" on a Fel-Pro, which was right where the AERA specs it generically for the IDI engine. I found machined washers at that spec.

    head cylinder rebuild questions

Which is exactly why I did mine (though my recession was in well in spec, which may make me even more hard headed or anal than you ( : < o) BUT remember that you have to use test valve springs. The stock springs will compress the lifters and invalidate the check). With the engine running, oil...

    head cylinder rebuild questions

It's a big gamble. Specs are specs and they exist for a good reason. The machinists I know don't so blatantly ignore them. Exceptions are when they are done for a reason to achieve some goal. I don't see a goal here, except avoiding having to redo some work. If there is one, have him explain...
