    Remanufacured IDI

True. I had to go 80 miles outside of the Bay Area to find a machine shop that would work on my idi. There was no reputable machine shop close by that wanted to work on any diesel motor. Most did not want to deal with the weight and size. A few said that the soot dirties up their hot tank.

I'm reading that 10 AWG wire should have 1 ohm resistance per 1000 feet. That is .001 ohm per foot. If there is 4 feet added to each of the 8 glow plug wires for a total of 32 feet, the added wiring would add .032 ohms to the system. I'm reading different things about what the ohms of the glow...

Wow that is an impressive comparison. Mine look just like your machine shop installed ones. Makes me want to get an installation tool and reinstall mine.

Wes, can you do a kit to relocate the stock controller to the fender? Just the wire harness. I would like to relocate mine but I don't want to go to a manual controller.

They're removed and measured. Only 2 messured exactly 6.120". Five measured less, with the shortest being 6.115". The remaining twenty-seven studs were oversized, with the longest being 6.128". This was using a cheap Harbour Freight 8" digital micrometer that never returns to zero accurately. I...

Thanks for that link. That is good info. I called ARP and they said the studs should measure 6.120 inches. That is a little longer than what Justin measured. I'll just pull them and see what I get.

So I made a real idiot mistake. When I read about doing the cooling mod, I thought I was supposed to leave the inserts out. But I just read about the guy installing studs while the motor is in his truck and @Thewespaul points out that the insert is still needed, just with enlarged holes. So now...

I checked the valve recesstion as best as I could with dial caliper. I also checked a few with feeler gauges to make sure that the readings were in the right ballpark. They were no more than .010 from each other. It was actually probably less than that. Next weekend I'm going to try compressing...

When I bought my injection pump the guy threw in a set if lifters that he said had only an hour or so of run time. They were really clean with no soot, so I took them. Now that I look at them closer, the rollers feel really smooth but the outside surfaces have some wear. I am hesitant to use...

Work got in the way and I didnt get to touch the motor for a while. I took your advice @Thewespaul and torqued down the head to check the piston to valve clearance again. Numbers were all over the place again. Actually different than what I measured last time. Still plenty of clearance, ranging...

    IDI Parts

The motor was dropped while I was buying it. The guy was loading it into my truck when his rigging failed. The motor fell about 3 or 4 feet and hit the ground. I spent so much time inspecting the block and crank for damage that I never looked at the oil pump. Well the front gear got bent...

What clearances should I be looking for when checking the oil pump? Anything else I should be looking for? Thanks.

I may do that this weekend. But I still had a variance of .020 on the intake and .025 on the exhaust for the head that was torqued down. It is the newer Typ4 cam. Right. There was no up/down play. The retainer would barely fit in. I'm not sure what year the motor is, but it is a later version...

I don't think it was the washers. I only made two lifteers and the differences were all across the board. I don't have a proper tool to check the valve recession. I may buy one. The best that I could do was with a dial caliper and a straight edge and the biggest difference was about .010, with...

Thanks fellas. That makes me feel a lot better now that you have said that. Last night I made to solid lifters with washers as @IDIBRONCO had described. For me, four #6 washers at the bottom, in the spring cup, and five #10 washers on top of that, fit just right with the retainer clip barely...

One thing that I am worried about is that as I was seating the rods onto the crank, the bearing lube kept getting on the machined mating surfaces where the rods and their caps meet together. I didnt see a way to keep them clean while still keeping adequate lube on the rod journals and bearings...

I could never get anyone to answer at Hastings. Maybe they took the week off for the holidays. I ended up running the oil rings since they were still within the spec. I doubt a few more thousandths will allow any noticable oil past. I gapped the top ring to .018. I didn't want to use the...

These piston rings are driving me crazy. The oil ring gaps are at the top of the spec range, ranging from .019 to .024. I feel like I should send them back but that would set my build back few days. They are Hastings rings.

The machine shop installed them. I asked about the special International tool. He said he did not have it and would use a regular large punch to install them. He assured me not to worry, that he has installed many of them over the last 40 years without a problem. I decided to trust him, but I...

I'm using a book called "Engine Builders Handbook" by Tom Monroe. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Engine-Builders-Handbook-Tom-Monroe/dp/1557882452 I am also using this site a ton. There is no better source for these motors. I did a ton of research on this site and read that book a few...
