    Zf5 synchros

V8BBGER where have you been since about 1988? Go ahead and fill a ZF5 up with 90wt. At the best it won’t shift worth a damn. At worst the bearings will burn up. Technology moved on. I sounded like you when I got my first ZFs back in 1994.

Getting by with one battery in summer?

I have been using Battery Systems which are made in Singapore or other offshore location. I lost my access to the fleet national account so went to Deka. Usually got 7 years out of the Battery Systems units. One trick I have used to help life is to buy the lowest CCA’s you can get by with. Here...

Getting by with one battery in summer?

East Penn makes Deka and some private labels. I have been a fan of them in the past, kind of the underdog in the race. However I just recently had a Deka group 65 go open on me in the 91 ( zero volts) that was just 3 years old. Out of warranty.

    Project Big Blue

On the RMS I had some engines back in the 80’s that were very sensitive to head surface finish. Had to run pure graphite head gaskets on a very smooth surface. On the IDI head surfacing I have ran into the issue with the precuts being hard. The shop that used to do mine used an actual surface...

Booyah I know Ra is quoted on head specs and is a surface finish quality measurement could you explain how it is measured?

    Rear fuel tank shenanigan question

And you train horses too..... I grew up on a remote cattle ranch with horses. My wife has been a trainer for a lifetime. Quiet with a light touch has been our way. Started with John Lyons I guess.

    Zf5 synchros

Redline MTL has done the trick for me for years. Not to say the Penz doesn’t work just that for many of us MTL has worked if there was anything left of the synchros at all.

    Rear fuel tank shenanigan question

Dane, Im impressed! 16, going to school, working and keeping your own truck running. You are the future of America son. And remind me of me at that age (and everyone I know that is worth a darn).

    RSK questions

I have looked hard at doing the “no RSK superduty 99-04 front springs conversion” on my 91. Yes there is less frame foreword of the stock shackle mounting point than 92-97 but still enough for the foreword shackle mount. The frame is actually far stronger than 92-97. Just have to notch bumper or...

    RSK questions

There is a way to run Super Duty front springs and get the ride without raising it above F350 stock height. It was posted on Pirate 4x4. Especially applicable to a 4x2 conversion since it involves welding bushing tubes through the frame in the front and you already have to mod this anyway.

    Help picking eng. Swap

Did you check out the 6AT Cummins? It will fit anywhere a Chevy 292 or Ford 300 big 6 gas will fit. Designed originally to replace those in UPS conversions if I read correctly.

    Help picking eng. Swap

You would think with the number of good engines out there one would be perfect. One that would be close is the 2.8 Cummins being sold in repower kits. Kind of expensive but capable. I believe this is part of the “A” series. There is also a 6AT series that honestly looks like a Chevy 230-250 6...

    Project Big Blue

Didn’t mean it was hydrolock from rain just that the only similar gasket failure I’ve seen on a studded engine was from hydrolock.
  15. G

    Project Big Blue

Might consider a hydrolock. Long shot but I had a studded 6.9 blow the gasket out like that. It was due to rainwater in my case. Blew the gasket out and all the freeze plugs!

    Amsoil synchromesh in ZF-5

Redline MTL has kept my ZF’s happy. My 91 had 210,000 miles on the trans and shifts perfectly.

    Anybody put a C6 pan w/drain?

I just drill a 1/2” hole in the lowest point of the pan, set a 1/2 nf nut over the hole on the outside and braze it. Short bolt with copper washer serves as the plug. For the price though that deep pan is a deal. Just be sure it has the parts to drop the filter down too. C6 has only a screen so...

    Anybody put a C6 pan w/drain?

You can do it! The torque converter holds more oil than the stock pan. I do it by taking a remote starter under and bumping it around until the plug shows up in the access area.

    96 F250 PCM IDM Question

IDM is interchangeable for all 7.3’s from 94 to 03. The newer ones are slightly better but all function the same. I pickup any IDM I see if cheap. On the PCM the OBS one is pinned differently than SD. I would speak with Diesel Technology of Chattanooga, he will be able to tell you which ones...

    91 f350 hyrdo boost swap.

I did this swap on my 91 which I use to haul cattle regularly. For me it was a night and day difference. Brake system was in good order before swap. I used all 88-97 F Superduty (F450) parts including the brake pedal. There are great threads over on Powerstroke army in the 94-97 7.3 upgrades...

    Frame on? Resto?

So on the vacuum switch... It is used on trucks with a vacuum brake booster to give a brake warning if vacuum is low. If I remember right you are converting to hydoboost. If so the vacuum switch is unnecessary for brake warning but could be left to indicate low vacuum in the hvac system if you...
