    Pressure washing

In my garbage truck fleet we did our best to pressure wash 2 engines a night. We did our best to train the washers to avoid electrical items but they weren’t mechanics. About one or two times a month we had to dry something out. I personally blast away, just avoid connectors and modules. The...

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

You will really need an intercooler with 200/30 injectors.

    woe is me.....

Hear you on not realizing how bad it is starting..... all last winter I was aware of slow starting but it never failed to start. Finally got around to checking it out and found out one battery was at zero volts. So all winter long the 19 year old Powermaster starter got it done on one battery!

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Whoever you go to discuss all the details, if they don’t have time for you move on. 160’s or 160/30’s make a nice reliable daily use truck. Let us know what turbo and injectors you have in the SD engine. Also is your OBS intercooled or do you plan for it to be?

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Hate to say it, Swamps was great for years but the new owners are struggling. Took 2 months to get injectors around Jan this year. Others have commented as well. Don’t want to kick them when they are down but be aware. Might want to consider Rosewood or Full Force.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

As far as ZF5....bolt on the OBS parts and go.......just like stock.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Are you planning on running a multi position switchable chip such as a Hydra? If so the chip will hold all the programs needed for the injectors you run. Even on “stock” setting.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

If your SD engine comes with a real worthy complete (not modded stock) turbo would be the only reason to go through the hassle of running SD turbo system.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Turbo system wise the SD system can be made to fit OBS. For a stock SD turbo not worth it..for a older tech SD perf turbo with “66” somewhere in the name..... forget it get one of the drop it SXE based turbos or run stock OBS until you can afford a drop in or T4 system.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Trans wise just run all OBS parts adaptor plate out.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Regarding injectors, run whatever you like and have the programming to run them on your chip. Or if you are a detailed, methodical elecricly orientated person you could swap in the PCM connector, switch to a SD Map sensor and run SD PCM. There is a stickie out there on PSA or PSN for it.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

For most other items just bolt the OBS item on the new engine. Valve cover gaskets have different plugs on the outside so they have to change.

    SD 7.3 into OBS w/ ZF5

Here is what I know to be fact. 7.3 long block assemblies interchange between OBS and SD with one exception, there is no fuel pump lobe on the SD 7.3 cam so SD in OBS requires electric fuel. Should be done to every performance 7.3 so no issue.

    Hydro Lock PSA

My hydrolock horror story, short version: Fresh rebuilt 6.9 with less than 1,000 miles on it. I’m out of state for a few months. Tell son to start it and let it warm up every week or two. Wife calls, says truck just blew up. Big Bang, all of the coolant on the ground, parts on the ground. Get...

    electric fuel pump conversion

That’s why I only use Chilton and Motors manuals as a last resort. The mechanical lift pump on 6.9 and 7.3 has 2 lines. The filter head has 3 lines.

    A/C System

Booyah what is your opinion on putting on a more modern design condenser when changing to 134?

    A/C System

Yep that’s why we never tried it back in the changeover days. Works great DIY though!

Encountering resistence spots in 1987 Ford E-350 van with pitman arm steering

I’m not familiar enough with the E series to know for sure.... If there is an actual u joint in the Steering column shaft it could be rusted or binding.

    A/C System

Not sure why there is so much negativity regarding propane based refrigerants. Works for me. I have also used Johnson’s Freeze 12. A friend got tired of the negativity and gave me a canister of it. My 71 Datsun B110 1200 coupe has hang on air and didn’t perform well on R134. Poor idle/low speed...

    A/C System

My 91 came with Duracool, a propane based refrigerant already on it when I bought it from the original owner in 2001. For about 15 years I put a can of Duracool in it in the spring.....good to go. Good cooling performance too. What I didn’t think of was to replace the oil that had been leaking...

    A/C System

Been through this a lot back in the days when R12 was phased out. Most things did not have a condenser suitable for R134. On the fleet we had to do everything by the book (no propane based refrigerants) so most got the condenser replaced with a R134 capable unit. If not changed a constant cycle...

    Oil Pressure

These engines have an oil pressure regulator not a relief valve so the oil pressure plateaus instead of climbing higher and higher.

    rear axle identification

I have both long and short pinion sterlings here. I’m sure a way to tell by measuring is possible. If still replacement I could measure. As far as I know the only factory disc brake with 8x6.5 lug pattern is from vans around 98 to 03 or so. But I believe they had Dana 60’s. It has been done to...

    Electric pump setups

Laine, for some nice visuals go take a look at 444fab.com For Powerstrokes but still very nice. Will actually work for IDI’s with the right regulator. If you are just running one tank even sweeter! I had one Facet Duralift, wasn’t keeping pressure up with a heavy load. I had a spare new Facet so...
