My WOT (and hauling) test run is a 7% grade about 1.2 miles long straight up a canyon wall virtually no curves. Come off the bridge at 30, one curve then hammer down to the top.
When all this began (empty) you would get up to 5th about 1/2 way up and then loose it back to 4th. Crest the top at...
Road test: I have a 30 mile loop over to another ranch I do every 2 or 3 days to feed/ check cattle.
Found that the Swagelok valve has a little dead band to it, still within spec but not as perfectly steady as I hoped. Set at 6.5 it will occasionally hit 7 on the top. Under WOT it will drop to...
So I have a Swagelok CPA-4 adjustable poppet valve set up as a pressure relief on the bleed line from the filter head to return to tank. I adjusted it down to have 6.5 psi fuel pressure with pumps on but engine off.
Here are the timing readings I got with my Mac ET18 DPM (same as SnapOn MT257)...
More findings:
Dash tach is off 200 rpm. Me: i“Hold rpm steady at 2000 so I can check timing” Son: OK. Me: I said 2000 not 1800 Son: yep got it dead on 2000. Sure enough off 200 rpm. Since it is a manual trans no effect on anything but the tach.
Fuel psi test gauge accuracy. I was using my...
From the port formerly occupied by the vacuum switch on the fuel filter head. Should be just what the pump sees.
I have a Swagelok adjustable spring loaded poppet valve in the return line from the filter head in place of the original orficed return fitting. I’m going to experiment with getting...
There has to be something I’m missing I have timing at 9*. Seems to have better part throttle performance, WAY worse fuel mileage, and past 1/2 throttle there is no change in power or smoke. Just goes flat.
Wes, also interested in your comment that it was a lot of pressure drop for a stock pump. It was rebuilt by local ADS certified shop I used for years. It is my spare. But fresh rebuild with a lot of shelf time.
My pumps theoretically put out 66 gph. It will fill a gallon jug in 1:20.
Gotta...
So after I changed the fuel system and increased pressure it increased my timing from the 9 I set it to 20,000 miles ago to 12. Or something else happened. Cold idle timing advance is working, engine sound changes when applying / removing power. Pressing down the light load timing lever...
Sorry to say it but telling us you have a Pensacola pump and now you have problems it about the same as saying I hit my thumb with a hammer and now it hurts.......
However.... assumptions are the mother of all diagnostic errors. So before assuming anything start by hooking up a fuel pressure...
I did reset the timing but I’m wondering if I shouldn’t because there is 9 psi while running the timing test but 6.5 under load so is it retarding under load compared to the timing test?
I think my next move is to try and stabilize the fuel pressure.
I finally made time to rework my fuel system on the 91.
It had a Facet Duralift that was making 6psi but dropping to 0 to 1 under heavy load. Added a second Duralift in parallel (why not already had it). Now have 8.5 to 9 psi at idle and light load. 6.5 to 7 under load. Checked timing after and...
Listening to that and watching the shifter indicate you have a miss at low rpm light load (3rd video) makes me think it may take a tear down to find it.
Is compression good? Even? Is the blow by stream with oil cap off steady or does it puff? Oil consumption? Smoke?
These things may help pin...
Why gut it? The only thing it does is prevent a run away engine IF the air intake is restricted. If the air filter or intake system is severely restricted the CDR closes to prevent the engine from sucking oil from the crankcase through the vent and running away until it blows from uncontrolled...
Funny about Optimas. The quality has to have dropped dramatically. I took over a fleet of garbage trucks that included 2007 Peterbilts that were ordered with Optima yellow tops. In 2014 they were just starting to fail. I have a pair in my tractor that are still going.
If there is a groove in the seal surface there are a couple fixes. There is a wear ring for the seal surface (can’t recall if it comes in a kit with the seal) or just set the seal at a different depth so it misses the groove.
I think 2 reasons why the filter is mounted on the engine from the factory in original spot: It was supplied with the engine so nothing separate to track or install. And where it is gets some heat from the engine in arctic conditions and avoids road spray. If those don’t apply to you then this...
The reason I should never forget is I once put a new MC on our 71 Datsun B110 “1200” Coupe on Friday night. Next morning headed out on a drive through Yosemite. Almost never use the brakes in this car since it weighs 1200 lbs or so and has a sweet shifting 5 speed. It is a twisty road rocket you...
The thought about the pushrod adjustment is a good one and one I should never forget.
If the pushrod doesn’t allow the master cylinder piston to fully return and uncover the fill port bad things will happen. Air cannot be exhausted and the master cylinder cannot refill well. Sometimes it just...
