    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

That's a neat instrument display... is it wireless too? No kidding, I know how an air leak works. My point was that the turbo passes most of the gas, a lot more than a 1/32" gap. What I'm interested in is the *percentage* losses. The compressor makes boost approximately proportional to the...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

Thanks for the data. I also found a large intake-side leak (snail to intake gasket) by the blowby under pressure that sprayed onto the firewall padding! I'm sure that accounted for some of the improvement when I put the new CHRA in, but I'll never know how much, now... I'm still looking for...

    FAN UPGRADE COOLING/OVERHEATING

How big a bumper? Got a picture? Even a new Motorcraft t-stat could be bad out of the box. Check it on the stove. There's a saying in medicine, "When you hear hoof beats, think of horses, not zebras". Sounds like you've eliminated the horses... time to start looking for zebras!

Also - I don't have the original air intake ducting (which was restrictive at the front opening anyway). The 4" snout on the factory airbox is just open under the hood. I also plan to build a cold-air intake with a piece of dryer duct, which should also help lower the temps a tad.

    FAN UPGRADE COOLING/OVERHEATING

OK, good to know, that eliminates the uncertainty ;) Just how hot is it getting, and when? So... either you don't have enough airflow, not enough radiator capacity, the water pump isn't pumping, or making too much heat! Airflow at highway speed is not the problem on our trucks (the fan is...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

A turbo effects the boost, a leak will affect the boost :D Yes, I am aware of that! My point is that the smaller the leak, the less effect it will have... I would like to hear, from someone who actually had a small leak and fixed it, how much difference it made... I too have read that...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

Thanks. I actually did wire it shut and it made only a small difference, not enough to risk running that way with no protection at all. My spring feels very strong too. I could apply variable air pressure to the actuator and watch the gate arm for movement, but that doesn't tell me how effective...

    FAN UPGRADE COOLING/OVERHEATING

Question: Do you know it's overheating (do you have a temperature gauge with graduations, checked against boiling water temp at your elevation)? I once had a car indicating overheating... changed t-stat, checked radiator, everything. Turned out to be a bad temp sensor

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

The question is, why isn't there more boost with the wastegate line disconnected and the fuel turned up to where the EGT can hit 1200 ;) Since my 7.3 is not studded, that 11 psi seems to be a safe limit anyway. It's a lot more responsive just driving around. My concern is the EGT which reaches...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

How would that happen? I plumbed it so the fuel goes through the mechanical pump first, then through the electric pump, then to the filter... Or were you referring to TNBrett's suggestion to parallel the pumps?

My cold oil pressure also looks about the same as it did before the CHRA swap. Check it out hot, you might find a difference like I did. I wasn't trying to be funny... I'm wondering if my oil pump is really marginal from wear, and with the extra demand from the worn turbo, it wasn't able to...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

That is correct. I connected to the main gallery at the top rear of the engine, and ran a #4 Teflon braided line to the turbo oil feed with a 180 degree tube AN fitting to line it up with the feed port. The switch/sender on a stock IDIT is installed at the turbo (on the other feed casting...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

OK, more driving today. I can get 10.5 psi if I really mash the pedal all the way to the floor. Time to check the adjustment and see if it's really moving the pump arm all the way. Another interesting observation: the oil pressure (sending unit at turbo oil inlet) is higher! It used to drop off...

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

A couple things I forgot to mention: 1) The truck ('93) was originally a 7.3 NA, 5-speed. I bolted on the complete factory turbo setup. 2) Exhaust has a Gale Banks downpipe (and 3" pipe with one Walker "garbage truck" muffler).

    Turbo experts... where's the boost?

As you may have seen in the "Great deal on a new turbo" thread, I elected to just buy the $209 center section (CHRA) instead of the $595 complete turbo. It's in and working, but as those old Wendy's commercials used to say, "Where's the beef boost"? ;) I have an IP and injectors of unknown age...

Great deal on a new turbo

Truck is back together :) I decided not to hack the fuel line repair and have to mess with it again next week, so I went to town and paid the $63 with tax for a Standard Motor Products return line kit (comes with injector copper washers which I'll need someday). I got everything back together...

    Smoke while warming up

Sounds like someone installed the IP drive gear a tooth off... I didn't even know the IP could be moved from 13 ATDC to 8 BTDC (that's 21 degrees!)

Caps are late-style (1/4"). That's the one O'Reilly has. Another possible solution I thought up: block the broken-off opening with JB Weld putty, which I have, then tee the line from the IP rotor into the return hoses somewhere else... that only requires a 1/4" barb tee. It also occurs to me...

Great deal on a new turbo

It occurs to me that the local Ford dealer might have one on the shelf (not likely, but possible). Naturally it's now Friday night... sigh. If anyone has a spare, the one I need has the nipples at 90 degrees, not inline. Thanks for any help... now I have to check and see if I have early or late...

Great deal on a new turbo

I'll check O'Reilly (we actually have two). It never occurred to me that the chain stores would have something useful for my old IDI ;) Edited to add: They have the entire kit... for $57.99. Ouch. I replaced the hoses and o-rings (with Viton from Mcmaster-Carr) just a few years ago... all I need...

Great deal on a new turbo

Got the o-ring today (the ebay seller is clueless and responds slowly. He insists the too-small one goes over the backing plate flange. I sent a pic of the groove in the compressor housing it's supposed to go in, and haven't heard back). Anyway... Pro tip: Carefully mark the clocking of both...

Electric fuel pump wont push gas unless engine cranking?

There are also a lot of people who have perfectly satisfactory results, if they use the correct pump. I put a Facet 40285 on my truck (4-7 psi, which is the proper pressure) when I added a factory turbo setup about 3 years ago, and I've never seen the fuel filter light come on, regardless of...

Great deal on a new turbo

It was easier to find the p/n with the numbers off the old center section: 1819744C91. That is also known as a 466533-0001 (complete Garrett turbo). With that info, it did not take long to find the o-ring is part 403069-004. Under two bucks, so I ordered two. You don't want to know what UPS...

Great deal on a new turbo

Sent email to Wes... does anyone know the part number for that o-ring? I'm having trouble finding it. I think it's this one: https://www.mddistributorsstore.com/garrett/4030690064/turbo-backplate-to-compressor-housing-oring but it might be this one...

Great deal on a new turbo

Today I got the cartridge and started on the swap. Pulling the turbo is always a PITA. On my truck (originally NA) it will NOT come out with both the pedestal and elbow attached. I spent a lot of time trying to disconnect the elbow at the exhaust housing... it's basically impossible to get the...
