    6.9 cranking but no start

My old engine wouldn't start reliably with ether either, my guess is they have to have decent compression to make enough heat... but it would light up with glowplugs decent enough till <35F. After that I needed the block heater too or an act from above but that engine was in rough shape...

    6.9 cranking but no start

Glad to hear it. If you've got fuel you just need heat. You guys could try disabling the plugs and ether (and block heater) but that can be more risky.

    6.9 cranking but no start

Happy to help, we all gotta start somewhere Not likely to be timing. No matter how advanced or retarded, it would still be injecting fuel at some point into the heads. Indirect injection isn't as picky by nature. Usually it'll clatter like hell if its too far one way or the other when running...

    Cold weather idling for heat

Thats what I'm thinking too, would be neat if we had any data on glowplug lifespan of first start glows versus those that do afterglows but I doubt there is any available

    Cold weather idling for heat

Right, I don't think I said anything about coolant. I was just having a thought experiment wondering how much they really help to heat the cylinders beyond the precup area

    6.9 cranking but no start

You'll get smoke without glowplugs if you have fuel flowing out from the injectors, it'll be whitish. The only thing glowplugs do is warm up the engine for several seconds, then turn off. It's not like spark plugs on a gas engine. You can run these engines without glowplugs, some guys use...

    6.9 cranking but no start

How much fuel are we talking, A dribble while cranking? Here's an easy test. On top of your IP is a wire, unplug it, turn the key to on, and tap the wire to the post. Should be some sparks, and a click from the IP. If you don't have a click the FSS is stuck shut not letting fuel flow. You can...

    Cold weather idling for heat

I'd like to see a test on how much they really do help. I imagine they do to an extent but I'm not sure how much... Glow plugs get hotter than hell, at least 1500ºF but imagining how much air and cold fuel is being exchanged every second of a 6.9/7.3 idling to counteract that heat. It would be...

    Frying GP switches

Thanks for that. My 87 6.9 was using the newer system so I spaced that. The relay looks about the same to me.

Slow start at 47 °F ... Glow plugs?

Just watched your videos, pretty sure it's fuel intrusion like my old engine. Second video in you can hear it try to light for a split second then keep cranking on. That and the fact that a cold restart is so much faster than the first start. You haven't built enough heat to be worth a damn, but...

Slow start at 47 °F ... Glow plugs?

2 seconds to restart is fine when cold. Yes verify the glow plugs are good. The wiring to them can be bad too, as well as corroded connections, bad fuse links, etc. If it took several seconds the first try and 2 on an immediate restart, i would assume air intrusion. If you make a toggle switch...

No smoke, no fuel in the cylinders...

Slow start at 47 °F ... Glow plugs?

Upfront i haven't had time to watch your videos... If you have white smoke readily you should be primed up. My guess is your engine is tired like my old one was. If all 8 plugs didn't work it wouldn't light off under 40F. Manual glowplugs with Bosch helped the most, they seem to be hotter than...

    6.9 cranking but no start

I personally would: crank it with the pedal floored. See smoke out the exhaust? No smoke means no fuel trying to burn. White means cold/unburnt fuel, black means its igniting. Blue means ignition with motor oil, engines probably well worn. Then I'd bypass the gp relay, with a screwdriver you...

    Frying GP switches

There is a sticky here somewhere, but usually its done one of two ways: Switch hot or switch ground. From memory: I did ground method, saves on wiring, safer, etc. The relay should have two big fat posts, one from battery, one to the plugs. It should have two little posts, one ground and one...

    Frying GP switches

Gp switch? These come with automated gp controllers. Is the manual switch installed correctly? They should have minimal load by triggering the gp relay. That switch can't handle a direct load to gps. Very high chance you have shorts somewhere if its the relay instead. The old cabling can crack...

Slow start at 47 °F ... Glow plugs?

Probably air intrusion. Easy test, after starting immediately turn it off and try again. If it pops right back on you purged the air. Same stumbling means it ain't that. No fuel no smoke. White fuel is cold or unburnt, black means its burning. I had an old engine that would billow black and...

One pump to rule them all

Not sure what else gets bolted onto that ps pump / ac bracket, could you shim it from behind with washers? It looks like you have plenty of space between the pulley and bracket

One pump to rule them all

I did something similar with junkyard parts. Not a fan of the partial shank on pulley but you can leave a bolt in to help I guess

Cetane Booster beneficial in a 7.3 idi?

whats the main ingredients in those mixes? I know the some fuel additives I like usually consist of naphtha and alcohol (isopropyl I believe), but they weren't advertised specifically as cetane boosters.

    What is this?

My cruise control never worked since I've owned the truck. What did work, was cutting the cable with a cutoff wheel and stealing the plastic parts off the throttle cable after the turbo melted it hundreds of miles from home. The cruise control cable was thicker and worked great as an emergency...

    Building a better db2

Love those numbers Wes! Fueling will always drop off with higher RPM, that's the nature of the db2/4... the more fuel he can get in the higher rpm range the better! Any word on what part of the rod let go on that guys' engine? Any chance it was high RPM versus something else? I'd kill to have...
