Notice it is an '86. Do you still have the water separator on it? If so, put a 3/8" bolt in the drain hose under the driver side foot board. Sounds to me like it may have some water in the fuel getting picked up. Dose the tanks with some Hot Shot Secret Extreme.
Sounds like the shop did not use the correct puller. They may have damaged the pump installing also w/o the right tools. Dorman makes one but I don't know good it is.
I think runnning from tranny output to radiator input then radiator output to tranny input will keep tranny fluid at operating temp & not being too cool.
