Its pretty rough. I didnt notice it yesterday but I wiped the oil off everything really well today to reduce the reflection from my flashlight and there it was :/
After a good look, it looks like the two valves are sitting at different heights above the retainers. The exhaust one is also beat up pretty bad. I guess that might explain the noise im hearing. Maybe some small pieces of that rocker got stuck under there. Or maybe it was damaged when the...
Is it safe to drive the vehicle without them? I found whats left of it near the bottom of the spring. I spun another one around and found that it's also brittle and cracked.
Edit: I guess it is just a plastic part of the spring retainer itself and not its own individual part.
Wow, okay! Im pretty curious about the glow plug bit, especially. The rocker bits have deep scoring in it, bet we can guess the cause of failure there.
Okay yall youre gonna think Im nuts. I opened the valve cover back up. Some of the vibration died down while driving and the truck feels intermittently like its running better. But there was still a tick or puff of air or rub on acceleration
Something is still up.
I bought an inspection mirror...
Well, everythings back together. How does this sound? Ive never actually been around another IDI. Would appreciate the thoughts. Aside from our miniex, this is the first diesel I've worked on. There's still some sounds Im not used to hearing after having it for a year, but that doesnt mean...
Apparently nothing, because it isn't from any of the rockers that are in there as far as I can tell. I put every cylinder at TDC and took them all off to inspect them. Looks like someone must have actually left a gigantic piece of rocker in there.
The mystery continues. Put cyl 7 at TDC, pulled the rockers, and found more shards of our mystery object. The rest of the pieces are nowhere to be found. One was lodged in a galley in the back corner of the head. We got any new guesses as to what it is? Turns out "broadly conical" was wrong lmao.
Ha, if it didnt start at the tail end of a long drive and a bunch of new symptoms I'd surely leave it be. Seeing as its my only vehicle, though, I gotta dig in. I'll update yall with what I find. Or maybe not and let Jesus Freak get creative. LOL
Im surprised this thing still runs, honestly...
Thats where Im leaning. I guess Im going to put together resources on how to take this all down and check it out tomorrow. Really appreciate yalls input.
Hm, okay. It has a pretty broad curve to it, like it would be a broad cone or some curved shape. Smooth on both the inner and outer face. That was my best guess.
I now have white smoke on start-up, a hum or vibration from what seems like the intake, and a quiet chuff coming from the passenger...
Sorry its been a minute. Jeez, fellas, looks like Im gonna have to start an onlyfans for my hand pics
Anyway, I havent been able to open the valve covers again the last couple days, but that cast piece is way too big to be part of any of the springs themselves. I think I may have found what it...
Thanks for your thoughts, yall. The glow plug part seems to make sense. Glad it didnt come unwrapped in there.
I guess Im going to open the valve cover back up and do a more thorough inspection. That shard would had to have come from something on the top side of the valvetrain, right? Nothing...
Hey, all. Been kicking around here reading threads for about a year, finally registered several months ago. I need some help. Working on a 1990 F250 with a 7.3l and a Jasper reman e4od.
Me engine, transmission, or both have been running fairly rough lately. At idle and when driving, there...
