Thanks guys. I’ll put a mechanical fuel pump back on.
Are there brands/versions to stay away from? Should I get a motor craft only pump or is a standard Chineseium off-the-shelf pump at my local store good enough (Carter/Delphi, etc?)
I read the Haynes book on this truck and it said to make sure the cam/arm is in the low position. How can you tell? With the pump backed off the block about 3/4 of the way, I couldn’t tell what position the arm was in.
Hey everyone, I got in contact with the PO and they mentioned that the fuel lift pump may still be under warranty.
I took the lift pump off. Here are some pictures. The truck has sat for a year+ so I think that answers where the white milkshake came from that’s near the pivot of the lift pump...
I heard that we need to be picky about what lift pumps we use to replace?
Do you have the link to your YT video on replacing the pump? I know the arm needs to be in a specific position as does the cam lobe
I removed the intake manifold and hosed it down to clean it. Then I put everything back together and installed the new fuel filter. Right now I’m having a hard time getting fuel to the fuel filter head and I took some videos.
I hooked a vacuum gauge up to the fuel inlet side of the lift pump...
One last thing: I’m assuming the answer is yes but is 12.2volts enough at the injector pump? The batteries read 12.56ish volts.
The passenger side primary battery read 12.56volts, so the difference between 12.56ish volts to 12.2volts at the IP seems like a considerable amount of voltage drop -...
Haven’t searched any threads for this question yet but does anyone have an injector pop tester that they would recommend buying? are the sub $100 amazon pop testers too good to be true?
On a whim I decided to try cranking it over on a quick spray of ether into the intake manifold.
It didn’t catch and did not start but there was the beginnings of an ignition in the the starter RPM. Because of this, I’m feeling impatient for the fuel filter to arrive - I’m ready to try again...
You’re right - The IDI’s can be stubborn.
I know that Timing is everything on these motors, so I’ll also be looking into checking the timing.
It wouldn’t hurt to buy an Amazon injector pop tester to verify that the injectors are in spec once this puppy lights off.
Hi, I verified that fuel is coming out of the shrader valve on the fuel filter head.
I’ve removed the fuel filter and am waiting on the new Wix to show up
I removed the unhooked AC compressor to clean up the motor bay a bit and to get the fuel filter off. It’s easier to remove the fuel filter...
Hey all thanks for the reply’s. It’s been a busy last couple of days.
I’ve had time to read what you all have said, and want to give you an update:
I tried cranking and starting on ether gain. Result: no start ❌ ❌❌
I tried cranking and starting on gas fumes
Result: no start ❌❌❌
So, not...
While I wait for the fuel filter to show up, I’d like to rule out other causes. So, is it possible that due to bad wiring that the starter might not be receiving the full cranking amps? And if so Is there a way to test this by use a multimeter on the starter terminals to check out how much...
It sure does. My electrical trouble shooting skills are a work in progress, but I have a multimeter.
Given that it’s still running the old style system, it sounds like I need to go get another voltage regulator and plug that in asap.
Is there a wiring schematic that I should be following to...
That’s a good plan. I went ahead and ran a clear hose fuel line from a diesel can and it hooks up to the steel line that wraps around the back of the motor.
That’s what I was thinking. The NAPA filter should be here in the coming days.
In the mean time I have some reading to do with the 86 and 89 electrical diagrams and make heads of the wiring mess.
The voltage regulator is missing.
[Tl;dr at the bottom]
Ok, so I disabled the glow plugs by pulling the electrical caps off and tucking away. Then I tried starting it using a generous spray of ether and reaching in the window to crank it over. Not happening - the truck turns over and spins like it isn’t registering that I’m...
Greetings all, first post here.
Picked up a 1986 F-250 that had a 89 7.3idi swapped into it for $900. Been parked & not running for over a year. The story goes that the original 6.9idi died and a 89 7.3idi was swapped in. PO says it ran for a couple of weeks after the swap, but then it died...
