    Project Big Red

Then you have kooks like me that start wondering what it would take to put heaters and motors in the OEM style mirrors. There does seem to be enough room in there if we took something from a smaller car. Driving a 2005 made me appreciate heated mirrors. I really need to dial back my list of...

    Bus pulling to both sides

Apologies for the long post, but here's my theory on what might be happening. New tires will often feel a little loose at higher speed until they wear in. This was true for every new set I installed for the first few thousand miles. Your old tires would have had a nice flat wear profile, which...

    IDI Facebook groups

Social media can certainly bring out the worst in some people. Most algorithms are designed to give you more of what you like, so it produces a confirmation bias (unless it's an identified political topic, then all bets are off...). The internet can be an amazing place, but the real world still...

    Crewcab 4X4 conversion.

The simplicity is what I like about it too. Similar mechanism to a mechanical shift transfer case. I like the simplicity of the old-school detroit locker too, but for the amount of time I spend on pavement, I'm sure I would learn to hate it.

    Crewcab 4X4 conversion.

Haven't seen one on oilburners but there are discussions elsewhere. I can't figure out how the mechanism itself operates though. If it's a cam lock mechanism like the detroit E-locker, then I'd be a little disappointed but it's still cheaper than aftermarket. If it's a direct acting engagement...

    Crewcab 4X4 conversion.

And then we have this to consider: https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/ford-differential-assembly-bc3z4026b?c=az0x&origin=pla&gclid=Cj0KCQiArdLvBRCrARIsAGhB_syZKz_amJOCwd9UmiepHOrRfA383u7p-qmNxBZD9joQFJkEIrzRDbQaAlrcEALw_wcB

    Crewcab 4X4 conversion.

I've been on the fence ever since starting my 4wd conversion. The torsen type seems nice due to low maintenance and smooth automatic operation, but lack of 100% lockup can be a problem for low speed wheeling. Holding the brakes can help induce a lockup but it requires some skill. Detroit style...

    7.3 tear down/rebuild (hydrolocked)

Whispering sweet nothings is an essential part to any kind of major mechanical work. Can't forget that step.

    Front springs?

If your front tires are vertical right now, then any amount of lift will produce positive camber: \---o-/. It's only a question of how much, and if the camber adjusters have enough range to compensate. Someone else will have to confirm on their F250 TTB, but from what I remember reading years...

    Front springs?

Too much spring arch and your wheels will have positive camber: \---o-/ Too little spring arch and you wheels have negative camber: /---o-\ Unlike a solid axle or A-arm suspension, the twin traction beam camber will change, depending on the ride height. So again, you need to make sure your...

    Dana 60 going in...eventually

Sprung a leak at the rear diff cover. I tried a different type of sealer and it didn't work...so back to Permatex "right stuff". But since I had it open, it was a perfect time to see how things were wearing in. The initial break-in seems to have gone well but the backlash was a little high. The...

    Front springs?

I'd say that's too close. Eyeball the front of the truck and compare the front tires to the rear. Do your front tires have a negative camber like this?: /----o--\ In addition to the other items already mentioned, check the bushings at both ends of the leaf springs. In particular, the top of the...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I hope the deck surfaces are ok. Usually you will see some erosion of the block or head surface. Depends on how long you drove it like that though (and luck). Sometimes a catastrophic head gasket failure is better.

88 f250 saved from savage nature

Well, at least you don't have to drill a hole at the end of the crack since it sniffed one out all on it's own.

    Dana 60 going in...eventually

For anyone curious, here's the comparison of the 3.08 style pinion gear to the 3.55 style. I remember being surprised at the size difference compared to the 4.10 gears many years ago when I first swapped. But even the 3.55 is small compared to this. I don't know if I'll ever put the 3.08s back...

    Dana 60 going in...eventually

Major milestone time. The 3.55 rear gears are now in. I went with a new Yukon set instead of using the spare axle I had lying around. My free time is limited lately and I didn't know what issues the other axle might have had. It was also a perfect opportunity to upgrade to a long pinion yoke...

    E4OD post-mortem, rebuild and upgrades

The converter lockup is fixed. I installed the new (rebuilt) pump and it worked on the first try when running on blocks. Road test also worked perfectly. Only remaining issue is lazy 2nd gear engine braking off throttle. But I have some valve body issues to work out.

    Wondering steering......

Love it LOL But seriously, try and have a look at your caster angle. That's what helps the truck return to center and track straight. You can get offset ball joint bushings to adjust this but its usually done at the alignment shop.

    D50 TTB out of 88 f250 in 89 f350 2wd

If you were doing this with the F150 platform, it would have been a bolt-on deal. I-Beams are the same length between 2wd and 4wd F150s. And both use coil springs. Overall, the TTBs worked really well on the F150 and ranger platforms. F250 leaf sprung TTBs are another story... The length of...

    Excessive Blowby/Crankcase pressure.

Yikes, that's some low compression numbers and begs a few questions. How does it sound while it's cranking? For there to be a completely dead cylinder, you would expect uneven cranking and excessive smoke once it's running. How did it run up to now? Plenty of power?

    1988 ford f250 7.3 idi 5 speed swapped

Sorry, brain fart. The connector for the transmission goes to the Driver's side. Should have been to a switch on the shift lever of the transmission itself.

    1988 ford f250 7.3 idi 5 speed swapped

Welcome to the forum! What did you do with the wires that used to go to the transmission? There would have been a connector on the passenger side of the C6 transmission [EDIT: WRONG... should be to the DRIVER'S side of the C6]. That is your neutral safety switch, and normally it prevents you...
