    Best source for built ZF-5?

I have to try that 3rd gear trick on my car now!

"Tank" my 91 Crew Cab Dually

I had plans to galvanize the frame on my truck during the restoration but ran out of time. I settled on undercoating and fluidfilm just so I could reassemble ASAP. My ultimate plan was to get a donor frame and box the front half of my frame. But, I had to draw the line somewhere (maybe in...

    Drive shaft length questions

There are plugs you can get that slips into the transmission output and keeps the oil contained by the original seal. 4-wheelers sometimes carry them in case the rear drive shaft breaks and they have to limp home on front wheel drive. You could inert one of these, then still zip-tie a bag on...

No wait to start light when hot

That's very interesting, because every ZD1-A I ever purchased was 10mm. Is there a difference between ZD9 and ZD1-A when it comes to socket size? Or are all of them supposed to be imperial? I know the thread pitch for sure is metric. I noticed my truck settled into eating glow plugs annually so...

    Coolant on glow plug?

That brown stuff could simply be rusty water trapped between the glow plug and the casting of the head. Rain water sometimes gets to the rear of the engine, since that's where the hood joins to the cowling. To me, it looks like the oil is getting in from the outside, not from the combustion...

    E4od transmission parts

I also added extra clutch friction plates to several of the clutch packs (1-2, 2-3, and 3-4). Made a big difference in high throttle upshifting. I see you're running a turbocharged engine. If you plan to upgrade power later on, you might want to consider this as well. I modified some of the...

Gasser Axle swapped on a 1993 F350 CCLB Diesel.

I wasn't aware of any differences between gas and diesel front axles/driveshafts. But the two donor trucks I used for 4x4 parts were both gassers as it turns out.

Dreaded ATS OEM Turbo Up-pipe slip joint leak has killed my boost 2022 edition.

I researched this product for a project at work some time ago but never pulled the trigger on using it for that particular application. But I did wonder if it would work for exhaust seals, since it was designed for steam flanges. I have an ATS 093 setup that has the same problem so it's in...

    1993 E4OD torque converter

The biggest risk with stock E4OD converters is they can explode (internally) without much prior warning. Once that happens, there is a risk of shrapnel getting to the rest of the moving parts. A good quality aftermarket unit with welded or furnace brazed turbine/impeller blades will eliminate...

    C6 shifting late/hard

Glad you guys caught him before he dropped the pan! Got scared for a moment as I was reading. The C6 uses high vacuum to produce early, soft shifts, and low (or zero) vacuum for late, hard shifts. Full throttle = late and hard. Light throttle = early and soft. It works well with gas engines...

    E40D slow TC lockup

That’s the sort of trophy you hang on to! And this is also why Ford went to steel carriers with later diesel e4od/4r100 transmissions.

    E40D slow TC lockup

Did you flush or replace the cooler? Here's why I'm asking. Oil flows from the torque converter into the cooler. The ability to flow normally is what causes a high pressure drop across the clutch inside the torque converter. I didn't learn this until relatively recently, but there is no rubber...

    E40D slow TC lockup

I see... Well, that doesn't really sound like a solenoid problem then. Could be a sticking valve in the valve body. I've had transmission functions that worked when cold, then started to fail when at operating temperature as the oil viscosity dropped. But sounds different. I wonder if the...

Drum Brakes (no wait, it's good news)

Looks like the shoes may have been part of the problem. Glad I'm not alone in having this happen, but also sorry to hear about so many problems! Cubey, your second photo shows exactly what was happening with mine, only mine was that way for many years and I didn't realize. Thanks for sharing...

    E40D slow TC lockup

Are you seeing a temperature reading directly from the controller output? or from an auxiliary controller. Have you tried entering different temperature settings to see if there is a difference? If you can't get it to respond differently, it may be time to call US Shift.

    E40D slow TC lockup

Those controllers should have a way to set the temperature thresh hold to allow lockup (when cold, the TC will not lock, above a pre-programmed temperature, lockup is allowed, depending on driving conditions). I know my old TCS does. There should be a setting in the tuning software that controls...

Drum Brakes (no wait, it's good news)

Most of us are not fans of drum brakes but there seems to be plenty of threads discussing the problems with drum brakes on these trucks, in particular. Most of the comments seem to be about the automatic adjusters not working. I was also having problems with the parking brake not working very...

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

Hi Scott, I stumbled over your YouYube channel this week and was thinking to invite you over here after our brief exchange in the comment thread. Looks like you found your own way. Starting to look like that 6.9 block is worth a closer look. Have you taken any measurements yet? You might be...

99-00 4.10 rear end transplant in my '86?

I did read it but didn't see an answer to my question regarding hubs. I would also be concerned about stress cracks bridging the holes with twice as many holes now arranged around the hub flange. So if a solution using only stock parts was available, that would be ideal. As for the diff gears...

99-00 4.10 rear end transplant in my '86?

Is there a way to swap a 10.5" using stock van parts to keep the 8.5" bolt pattern? Just wondering if there's a combo we could use with stock parts to use the new axle without having different rims on the rear.

Interesting. I was curious because the Sanden compressor was suggested for a retrofit on another one of my vehicles (not ford).

Let’s talk about egts and water temp

I'm impressed at your ability to control EGTs so well. My thought is to measure the intake temperature while pulling a long hill and see how high the temperature is really getting. If you're seeing intercooler temperature comparable to your thermostat temerature, then it stands to reason that...
