Quick question for the D60 front axle gurus: Is there an easy way to identify spline count for the inner axles on a Dana 60 High-Pinion?
This is for a later balljoint style that came out of a 1995 F350 (the one I retrofitted in my F250).
Everything I've read tells me it should have 35 spline...
To the Original Poster:
I finished the E-Locker install this weekend. It's not as big a job or as expensive compared to a full 4wd conversion. However, it still requires some care when setting up the gears. Though the only real setup is to check preload and backlash. Pinion depth is unlikely to...
Well, I think that's a wrap. I tried it in the yard in a few places on the slushy snow and gravel. I can certainly see it working correctly with no slip. As expected, the rear tires start chewing up the gravel on a tight turn as well. It's not an earth shattering improvement in traction, since...
Wires are routed to a simple rocker switch under the dash, just ahead of the 4wd shifter. I still like the idea of using a toyota land cruiser switch, since they come with dual locker functionality for when I eventually put a front locker in...
Well actually, I'm just a guy puttering in his own shop. So maybe the trade really is dead.LOL
Sometimes we get lucky. Or maybe Ford really was that good in keeping things consistent over the last 35 years? (yeah, I'll call it luck...)
I'd suggest a full vocabulary of weapons grade expletives...
Alright, so about that electrical connector.
My first plan was to drill the correct size hole into the case, so that I could just use the O-ring on the connector to keep everything sealed. Unfortunately, because there is no raised casting on the older differential cases, the connector punches...
Some of you may recall this thread from a little while back, where I had purchased a used factory Ford E-locker and did some investigating by taking it apart: https://www.oilburners.net/threads/ford-factory-e-locker-teardown-and-some-discussion.90536/
This weekend, I finally found the time and...
3k rebuild and then this? Now I'm gonna start crying!
If I understand correctly, the transmission is removed but the converter is still attached, correct?
If so, the pump shaft should still be protruding out the back of the converter. You could try to find a steel pipe that fits snug around...
Bart, Have a look at this thread:
https://www.oilburners.net/threads/drum-brakes-no-wait-its-good-news.91505/
I was fighting dragging rear drums for many years until I realized it was a problem with the mechanism itself. How does the E-brake work? If it's also not working, you might want to...
I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right. Fluid film will generally stay attached unless directly next to the tires and at highway speed in the rain. Which means that with a mild pressure washer, you can remove it. Cleaning off undercoating is very time consuming.
All things considered, I'd say that hot-dipping is a bargain. I've seen quotes like that for powder coating...which I would NOT recommend for anything but a garage queen/show car.
Can't wait to see the results!
Fluid Film Fan here.
Although it's a good idea to inspect and apply fluidfilm (or equivalent) annually, the protection doesn't drop off a cliff if you don't. The hidden areas are still protected because the stuff is sticky, doesn't dry out and migrates across surfaces. The consistency is...
100% on this point. Having a transfer case is very handy even on a 2wd.
I converted my truck from C6 automatic to E4OD roughly 15 years ago to get overdrive. I was already running tall 3.08 gears at the time and the donor truck was a 4wd, so it came with a transfer case. I drove the truck for...
I went with a "period correct" dana60 conversion on mine. This was with a 1995 donor F350:
https://www.oilburners.net/threads/dana-60-going-in-eventually.86730/
The Superduty coil spring setup is better in just about every way, but you'll have to swap the rear axle as well, unless you want to...
+1 on Jasper always being junk. Never bought one but heard of those that did. It's why I decided to rebuild my own engine when the time came years ago.
Yup, that's the same telltale that mine had as well. It would have probably been fine.
Those 12 lug steel reverse planetaries were $1500 when I saw them! And they were still out of stock.
I heard bad things about the stamped drum but we'll see how it turns out. I'm trying to remember if I tack welded it or not because I've seen some do that. My hope was to get a steel planetary carrier that could fit the original cast iron drum but none were available. I wasn't too impressed with...
Here's the Sonnax spacer: https://www.sonnax.com/parts/2079-center-support-shim
I've never these spacers but you can see how they're supposed to work. When I tore my transmission 13 years after the first build, the feed bolts were all still secure. I torqued them to spec on the second build...
I don't remember the exact number but that sounds about right. Roughly 3" between the beam and the frame is another number that comes to mind. The alignment show should also know the correct specification but it's worth asking just in case.
