    6.9 E350 C6 to E4OD or 4R100?

1989-1991 should have a speedometer cable style tailshaft. I read that some later models might still had the same tail shaft internally but the outside casing is blanked off. Best to look for an older transmission to avoid issues here. Note that almost all of the updates for the 4R100 will fit...

085 better spooling, zf5, and intercooled

My signature is up to date so all the specs are in there (3" exhaust/093/E4OD/3.55). Although, I did discover a small exhaust manifold leak a few months ago. It has much better midrange after swapping from the 088 setup to the 093. Exhaust manifold leak and the 3" tailpipe are probably not helping.

    Moose Diesel Poor Customer Sevice?

So if I understand correctly, Suzi is Mel's daughter, and she now runs Conestoga diesel? Or was the business completely sold out of the family now? I'm running a moose pump from 2010. Probably starting to have the timing plunger stick a little, and just an occasional hint of hesitation on...

085 better spooling, zf5, and intercooled

That's not what I was hoping to hear! My intercooler is still up on the shelf, waiting for me to install it. Was hoping for a moderate improvement in performance and EGTs.

    6.9 E350 C6 to E4OD or 4R100?

6-pinion steel planetaries became an option on some E4OD/4R100 transmissions in 1997. Although, its such a common upgrade that it's relatively inexpensive to purchase them aftermarket for a rebuild. Cost of paying a shop to rebuild it will not be so cheap, however. If you're using an all OEM...

    E4od delayed upshifting

Correct. Trucks up to 1991 still use the speedometer cable. 1992 and up combined the rear abs with a vehicle speed sensor, which also drives the electronic speedometer.

    1986 F250 6.9 Project

12MPG city, 16MPG highway. But its rare that I can cruise for an extended time on the highway. Most of my driving now is short distances to and from work. I recommend 7 - 10 PSI for a 6.9 until you put head studs. After studs? have at it. Most of the time I'm topping out at 10 PSI. Mine isn't...

    1986 F250 6.9 Project

Hi Speeddeamon. Just found your PM. Any questions, ask away. I've attached the three older style of ATS turbo kits. The last version of "Aurora" ATS kit was basically the same as the 093 version, but with an upgraded turbocharger. I've disconnected the wastegate on my 093 setup and it can reach...

    6.9 Overhaul Kits

That could be an opportunity to have some fun with the design. I always wanted to try dropping compression by making a deeper prechamber in the piston crown (would have to be careful to maintain minimum crown thickness). The pistons I'm running right now are dropped compression, but that was...

    OD worth the $ ?

Yup, mine was 4.10s and C6 when I first bought it many years ago. I switched to 3.08 gears and it worked well for a few years like that. 1st gear worked better than expected for towing, but I rarely had to move more than 5000lbs. My truck was also a 2wd at the time, so swapping only one gear set...

    6.9 Overhaul Kits

Well, this sure is depressing. My engine is still doing fine on a 15 year old rebuild but not having pistons available is not something I wanted to hear.

    OD worth the $ ?

Torque converter slip is not linear across the RPM range. The lower the RPM, the more the torque converter will slip, especially around the stall speed. More slip = more heat = more lost efficiency. RPM will drop with the overdrive engaged, but as I implied with my earlier post, much of that...

    6.9 IDI questions

13mpg highway in the winter is about right for an IDI with a C6 auto. Being an ambulance, it's likely 4.10 gears, which also doesn't help. Mine didn't do much better when I first got it. Top speed was about 70MPH. The easiest and cheapest upgrade would be regearing the rear axle. The best bang...

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

I think you're right, but I can't find all the details. He knew how to make things work.

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

A welcome note for sanity here. The only time I saw this done was with a ZF5, never an automatic. Alignment would certainly be a concern. I'm not sure how many miles Russ had on his ZF/diesel converter transmission but sounded like he as satisfied with the results. Would it have lasted 20 years...

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

Ok, I managed to find one of his older posts (almost 20 years ago. My God, where did the time go?). See Post #8: https://www.oilburners.net/threads/plate-between-c6-and-6-9.18197/

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

I think a few already tried this many years ago but I don't remember if it was on oilburners or FTE.com. The consensus was that it wasn't possible. The ZF5 was done by Typ4 many years ago. I think he used to have an excellent photograph showing the diesel pattern on the gasser bellhousing but I...

4WD IDI C6 are hard to find?

Regarding diesel vs big block bolt patterns, this got me many years ago when I first started the E4OD swap. I bought a 460 pattern transmission instead of a diesel. Short answer is no: Diesel and Big block are different. The top two bolts appear to be in the same location, but the lower four...

Ford Factory E-Locker Teardown (and some discussion)

I couldn't find any torque specs at the time either. I ended up looking at the bolt size and grade, then looked up a close match from a standard lookup chart for metric bolts. They have red loctite from factory, so don't forget to do the same when you reassemble. From what I recall, it was also...

Need an overdrive for my 1986 Ford 6.9 diesel

After many years with my E4OD, I still like it. I'll agree with what others have said about a locking torque converter vs auxiliary overdrive. Lockup is better, even if you don't have the option of splitting gears. Gear splitters make more sense with manual transmissions, because you don't have...

    Factory Ford E-Locker Install

As far as I know, they are only sold as an assembly, from Ford. Having said that, it appears that Yukon now offers a direct replacement "clone". Which means they may have parts available, if you call and ask. It's worth a shot: https://www.yukongear.com/shop/yp-f10-5-e
