Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

Take a look at some of the EV fires, they do melt the frame. Actually, some welders only operate on around 20VDC, it's all about the path. There's no way to cheat it. High amps is low volts, and high volts is low amps, which is why welding machines have transformers with huge wire for the...

Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

I misspoke. You only need one positive and one negative from the batteries to the front. I apologize for the confusion. Got a good excuse, but it's just that. It's still a work in progress and has changed since this pic, but that's a 2/0 welding cable repurposed dropping down to the starter. So...

Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

You'll be good with one 2/0 for each. Being a common ground system it wouldn't hurt to add a negative jumper to the frame by the batteries, with a couple other frame to body jumper spread around. Mobile electrical switches the negative almost as much as the positive, and the paths are...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I read somewhere that the proportioning valve isn't needed in engineered 4 wheel disk systems, as the caliper sizes are what controls the amount of pressure, so I also planned on just straight lines. Have the front seat out and am sound proofing before new carpet, so right now would be the...

    E350 GP Relay Delete

I had a laugh at myself over this issue. All the years I've spent in the electrical field and never got into automotive electrical. I've designed, engineered, and installed entire multistory commercial power distribution systems, worked on 15,000 volts, owned companies, and worked on then top...

Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

You can, but that could cause issues. It's all about the least resistance, and if there's bolts, nuts, and other parts between the preferred current flow it can cause anything from increased amps to operate, reduced device or charging performance, to unintended alternate paths created...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Looks nice. Where did you source the parts? I have a set of '03 axles been sitting outside unprotected on a slab for a couple years needing rehab before I can finally use the Sky RSK I picked up at the OBS show. Did you go hydroboost?

So what did you do with your truck today?

Running along the Columbia gets nasty winds, took the boat out there one and had to seriously throttle just to hit a plane in a headwind. Freaking river had whitecaps from the blow.

Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

DC voltage doesn't carry EMF's, that's only developed by AC, which is also why all voltage is generated in AC, then rectified and filtered into various levels of DC. From pulsating DC to pure sine wave. That said, make sure you have overcurrent protection at the positive battery terminals...

    E350 GP Relay Delete

Found an ammeter schematic for electronic regulator diagram. Looks to me like the stator wire is actually hanging out in open air at the alternator. Of course this was discovered AFTER pulling the entire harness from alt to reg, splitting it open to verify no broken wire hiding anywhere. Think...

    E350 GP Relay Delete

I like it. Not only does it work perfectly, I don't need to burn a fuse holder. Set the ground on the GP relay mount bolt just to keep everything in one place. Set the PB on the left side to leave it hot when cranking. No need to spend money on a new relay or have to figure out new mounts...

    High Current and Loose Wire

The reg is wherever it was installed OEM, pretty sure they hid it behind a battery at the grill. Is just another treasure hunt.

    Broken Glow plug tip solved

I lost a GP end today. Already have a similar borescope. Hopefully I can repeat your success. I did briefly consider turning it over in hope the compression would blow it but decided the result if it was on the wrong stroke wouldn't be worth the risk. Great Post!

    High Current and Loose Wire

They were 12.48VDC which is about perfect. Not much choice about it, thanks for the encouragement. It's an "old" style but probably rewound for 100A output which wouldn't require an additional belt for the dynamic resistance to generate the additional load. I don't think it's an issue until...

    High Current and Loose Wire

Got the '90 E350 running and noticed the ammeter on the dash was maxed out so popped the hood and got some crazy readings. This is low idle amps. Ignore the negative indicator just had the meter set opposite to current flow for readability. This is above 2k RPM but not sure as I was manually...

    E350 GP Relay Delete

At some point in this ex-Uhaul box trucks life the yellow wires feeding the GP relay contacts lost voltage, so someone took a red 8AWG MTW, attached it to the starter battery terminal, and put it on top of the 10 awg yellow wires ran in parallel that was OEM. I tried tracing the yellows, but...

    Clutch issues

Have posted about the kit, used it for everything from brake and clutch bleed to PS and transmission. Even used it to pull a couple quarts of ATF over fill after rebuild. Best $50 spent.

    E 350 V Belt Issue

I put a new belt on the alt and with a weight on the pedal for 1500 rpm popped the hood and the alt belt has a severe wobble between the crank and alt. I'm guessing these 7.3's turn clockwise. If no rain today I'll jack it up and get underneath. The PS belt works, the AC did until I started...

    E 350 V Belt Issue

Don't know what "abnormal" resistance is, can feel a slight resistance when turning by hand, but it is pumping air, and the brake assist works very well, like the difference between power steering and none. The difference between working on my C350 and E350 is crazy. I can see why they did the...

    ISO '90 E350 7.3 Electrical Manual

Could be the search engine, have been striking out looking for either an EVTM or factory shop manual for a '90 NA 7.3 long chassis E350. Hoping for the EVTM as that has component locations, all results so far have been for trucks, not much help for the vans. Not asking for free anything except...

    E 350 V Belt Issue

I agree. Was pretty amazed finding it, and just realized the jury rig could be the root of the issue I'm having. Will probably wind up pulling the fan and clocking all the pulleys before this is done. On another note, I just ordered two heim joint rods, one to replace the PS and the other for...

    E 350 V Belt Issue

This one is a much simpler version. Here it is loose, the belt can be easily removed. Here it is wrench tight, literally as tight, or perhaps tighter than had I used the 2' pry tool to tension. After trying multiple wrenches a small screwdriver worked best. Looking at these pics from yesterday...

    E 350 V Belt Issue

Definitely. That said, I was thinking about wire brushing the pullies. I reset all the belts after posting, and made sure everything was tight, and promptly snapped the alt belt around the block. I got as sideways as possible at idle and they all looked straight before leaving. I found a smooth...
