    Wide-range ZF-5 poll

Drove a wide range ZF in my 94 F250 N/A idi for some years, mostly hauling firewood and some heavy vehicle parts (engines, transmissions, frames, axles, etc). 1st gear is worthless unless you are pulling something real heavy or launching on a decent incline or both. 2nd gear is right in the...

    OD worth the $ ?

I havent read all the pages and posts yet but you mentioned early on that you dont work this truck at all and you would be just fine with a gas engine and/or F150. So, why not sell your idi and get say an I6 F150? No matter how you swing it, a diesel truck is going to be alot more $ and work...

    70 MPH at lower RPM

ZF5 with the driveline brake is going to be out of a superduty model truck and will be a 4x4 since the driveline brake mounts where the transfer case normally would and a 2wd ZF5 would have a very different tail housing without that mounting flange.

    Cleaning out the radiator

I was a bit miffed on who was necroing a 2 year old thread but this is some interesting information. So we are feeling that phosphoric acid is a good candidate for the coolant system? I use a range of acids at work (Welding engineer) - Ranging from Muriatic toilet bowl cleaner (minimal...

    TPS Voltages?

Oh thats awesome. If you can post some pictures of your work with pictures of adapting the Allison TPS I am sure people would appreciate it.

    TPS Voltages?

Heres a link to a helpful thread on the topic. Your idle speed may influence your reading somewhat. A sticky pedal, sticky throttle cable, anything causing the throttle to be higher than normal will cause your idle reading to appear high which will cause the two readings to seem odd. High idle...

    TPS Voltages?

Is this some kind of chinese bot on the forum? There is a thread in here about the topic. Might even be a sticky. I believe the ideal range is 1.2 at idle (after cold advance is off) and no higher than 4.5 at WOT. Also important that the reading increases and decreases smoothly throughout. I...

    6.9 7.3 oil consumption?

Well when it comes to an ICE, "more efficient" and burning fuel more completely are one and the same. Besides, the PSD can actively adjust it's injection pressure and pulse duration based on demand whereas the IDI cannot.

    6.9 7.3 oil consumption?

I wouldnt be surprised if the PSD ( I assume thats what we mean when saying "DI"?) achieves more complete combustion across the RPM range simply because of it's engine control systems being more precise and adaptable to different loads and speeds. I prefer the mechanical nature of the IDI...

    6.9 7.3 oil consumption?

That is especially common with turbo charged engines. I have the unfortunate situation of having 2 DDs that are both turbo charged and my commute is about 3 miles. Both vehicles contaminate their oil and start consuming some within 3k miles despite using top of the line amsoil oils. My volvo...

Engine Swap: DOWNGRADE 7.3L idi to 6.9L idi ???

Welcome to the freezing north! Alot more risk with the same reward at best! I bet you dont even know what anti-gel additive is, do ya whipper snapper?

Engine Swap: DOWNGRADE 7.3L idi to 6.9L idi ???

Whats nice is that you can find the area under your rig that you need to lay, then pack snow in the right spots to prop your head and shoulders up in a comfortable position for when you start fixing stuff. Besides that, you cant feel it when you bust your knuckles real bad...till they thaw ofc.

diy tow receiver on 88 f250

The configuration should certainly handle some load, the bolts arent likely to shear easily if they are grade 8 or higher. The issue is over time, the bolt holes are going to wallow out and the bolts will become damage where the plates are grinding against them. As soon as those holes loosen up...

    Who's smarter?

My wife and I have only had 1 car each with a payment, both to build credit for a house. Mine was my 2007 speed 3, paid 7k for it, did a bare minimum 5k loan on it. Bought at 72k, now has 192k and finally needing some work (body stuff, new england winters take their toll). Hers is a 2012 XC60...

    Who's smarter?

An important facet of doing all the work yourself is calculating your time as a cost. It is certainly cheaper in actual moneys to do the work yourself since you arent paying yourself for your time spent. My superduty only cost me ~2200$ after registering it and I have probably put ~400$ of...

    Who's smarter?

As a counterpoint, I have a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 that I bought with 72K on it. Currently has 197K and the most work I have done to it has been 2 coil packs at 55$ each. Sounds like it needs a rear wheel bearing as of right now.

    Who's smarter?

Yeah of course stuff happens to newer vehicles as well but there are tons and tons of parts of a vehicle that are not maintenance items and dont get serviced ever over the life of the vehicle, not to mention the actual body metal of the vehicle itself. The longer its on the road, the more stuff...

    Who's smarter?

I had this conversation with an old buddy of mine just a few weeks ago, driving down to philly to pickup a 1950s west german record player setup. He and I have always had older vehicles, always worked on them together. My first car was a 1982 crown vic, his was a 1984 lincoln towncar. Learned...

ATS 093 leaky slip joint repair

With regards to the 304 stainless option - was that chosen for it's weldability or for low material cost (or both?). 304 doesnt handle high heat and friction well and I would be concerned that the vibrations and pivoting in that joint would cause it to wear out and fail. How long it would last...

    7.3 bottom IP bolt

I socked the nut down another 1/2 turn and it felt like it snugged up more. Finally took the truck for a spin and boy howdy did that 5 degrees make a difference. It accelerates much faster right up to 3500rpm and seems to run cooler. Temp gauge didnt heat up as much and cooled down faster than...

    7.3 bottom IP bolt

Yeah I have no clue how I would ever get a torque wrench on there. Maybe a crows foot using a 1/4" torque wrench? I was just curious to see what the recommended value was so I could guesstimate where I am with it.

    7.3 bottom IP bolt

Yeah I can hardly see it but when I get some feeling in my fingers I think I can feel the nut turning and not the stud. Doesnt help that I can only turn it 1/16th of a turn at a time. I'll keep snugging it down and see how it goes. Anyone have an idea on a torque spec for these?

    7.3 bottom IP bolt

Hey all. I finally made a wrench that could get to that bottom bolt on the IP head to adjust my timing. When I went to loosen it, it was not tight. Went and loosened the other two bolts, adjusted my timing about 1/16" towards passenger side (was at 4.0 BTDC, now at 9.2 BTDC). I pinned the IP in...

    Drive shaft length questions

I havent had them do a 2pc for one of my trucks but they have medium and heavy duty trucks parked at their yard pretty frequently so I would assume they do. They are: CT-Drive Shaft Service out of East Hartford.
