need help for newbie re: 7.3

You can find the gaskets and o-rings online. And some dealerships have the oil cooler for sale still, its just kind of pricey. You can find second-hand oil coolers and oil-cooler headers on ebay every few months. Here's a pretty decent primer on how to fix the oil cooler. Do not use force...

    Electric fuel pump

I run that in my Jetta tdi without issues. I tried it in my IDI early on, and it was always starving for fuel. It didn't have the flow rate for what the engines need. I upgraded to the duralift e pump, and never had problems. That gold flo will work in a pinch, like if you need to limp the...

    Fuel not getting to engine

good advice. When I first read that comment, i just assumed he was talking about the inlet fuel hose, but if he was talking about the injector line.... that would be dangerous, and ultimately, not useful because the injector lines are carefully measured to be exactly equal, to preserve timing...

    Ac compressor. Which oil?

Could you post what you ended up finding? Someone in the future might end up in the same situation, read this thread, and might want to know what you did.

    Opinions please.. Thanks

If a seller doesn't post at least one picture of the engine bay and underside of the vehicle, I don't even bother looking further into it. $9K for a bondo auction mark-up and no pics of the engine?? Hard pass for me.

    Won’t start

Keep trying. If you got some fuel, then that's a good sign. Put the accelerator to the floor. 15-seconds cranking, then 2-minutes off. Repeat. Let the starter rest or you'll burn it up. Do that 5 or 6 times. If you still don't have more fuel dribbling out of the injector lines, then you...

    Quick Increase in Blowby

If your oil was like a jelly, then it was likely not flowing through the oil pump and subsequently not getting to the oil squirters for your piston rings. Your rings deteriorated, and caused the increase in blowby and other catastrophic issues. The engine will require a rebuild, at the very least.

Did you purge the air from the fuel lines? Are you getting constant flow out of your schrader valve? Read this: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/fuel-system/what-to-do-if-no-diesel-fuel-is-coming-out-of-the-schroeder-valve-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi/ If you have constant flow out of the schrader...

Tell me it's NOT the fuel injection pump.

I've had two IP's get stuck metering valves from a dry reservoir. Justin from R&D taught me himself how to adjust the metering valve because this type of thing can happen. It is "unlikely" as you say, but I'm assuming what the OP is telling us is correct, then his symptoms are nearly identical...

Tell me it's NOT the fuel injection pump.

It can stick if the IP is run dry, which appears to be the case when he was cranking.

Tell me it's NOT the fuel injection pump.

Fuel should be constant out of the Schrader valve. No bubbles or sputtering. Only worry about the metering valve if you have completely purged the air from the fuel lines and the IP is not pushing fuel to the injectors. Disconnect the return hose from the IP and see if you are getting fuel out...

Tell me it's NOT the fuel injection pump.

I know it's a dumb question, but did you fill the filter with diesel before reinstalling it? You could just have air in the system. Are you getting constant diesel from the schrader valve when you purge the air? If you are sure you have constant diesel from the schrader valve, and you are...

If you put on a lot of miles, yes. I'm going to put on 14,000 miles in the next 6 weeks, so yeah, biofuel alternatives pay for themselves and most of my engine upgrades. And with the crazy price of diesel and gas in California (thanks a lot Jerry Brown), biofuel is a very good alternative.

Yes. Upgrade to viton seals with anything biodiesel can touch. That means the injector line caps.

bbjordan is right on. As for my WVO, i store it in plastic jugs or plastic barrels. And I never run my biofuel through the stock fuel circuit. I have a dedicated WVO aluminum fuel tank, e-pump, filterhead, and heatexchangers. All my lines are aluminum or biofuel-rated hose, all fittings are...

I run WVO, not BioD. But yeah, it does quiet down a bit and EGT's are basically the same. I get about 1mpg better on Diesel, so the potency of WVO must be a little less, but it depends on if I'm comparing it to summer or winter Diesel. And it depends on the type of vegetable oil that I filter.

    Fuel not getting to engine

You should really bleed the injector lines if you can. If you know you can get diesel to the injectors, then you know you have a functioning IP. That's important, because if the IP is busted, then you'll have to drop a grand for a rebuild. Don't worry about the price. The seller just wants...

    Fuel not getting to engine

I'd lay off the ether if you can. These engines are not that hard to get started. As long as you are getting fuel to the injectors, enough voltage on the batteries, and you have moderate compression, it should run.

    Fuel not getting to engine

Is it not getting fuel to the IP or to the injectors? If it's not getting fuel to the IP, follow this: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/fuel-system/what-to-do-if-no-diesel-fuel-is-coming-out-of-the-schroeder-valve-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi/ If it's getting fuel to the filter and IP, then you aren't...

    Oil Cooler

A long time ago, I had on header that had a crack in it, so I archived it. No sense in using it because (best case) it'll just leak outside the block or (worst case) it'll leak oil and coolant together. I had a set of spare headers from ebay, so inspected and used them instead. These headers...

    Flying with a injection pump?

Insure your pump well if you choose to ship it USPS. I've had 2 packages (priority mail) disappear in the last year. I've flown with strange auto parts and tools. They got pissy once because my tubing bender was 6.75" inches long, and the maximum length for metal carry-on items is 7". They...

    Little more power

If you are looking to add a little more boost with very little work, upgrade to the Wicked Wheel 2. I just got one from R&D (to accommodate my 90cc IP and R&D injectors) and that WW2 is amazing. But I have studs, so maybe you don't want to push more boost into your intake without studs. The...

    Penny pinchin backyard rebuild

I'm not sure about the "unbolting pattern." I looked up the service manual and only found this: "Cylinder Head Removal 1. Engines w/ Serial No 823 762 and Below: Remove the seventeen cylinder head "plain head" mounting bolts and washers. Refer to Figure 3.14 (just a picture of a guy...

    Cheaper gauge alternatives?

I used auber for my boost and egt. I had to calibrate it myself. Not that hard. I still run their boost to this day, but after a few years I bought different pyros. The auber probe eventually failed. After a series of crummy pyros, I'm current using an expensive autometer. But the auber...

    Turbo trouble

Welcome to the Twilight Zone of Hypermax Customer Service. They either have no information about their kits or contradictory information. Like for example, my hypermax kit (the van version) is supposed to be timed 2 deg below the stock timing. But when I talked to them, they said 12 deg was...
