It should say (sensors) plural. :)
The speedometer uses the VSS. For the cable driven speedometer, use the transfer case if you have a 4x4. 4x2 will get a little complicated. You will need to source some parts to make it work.
Using an aftermarket controller is highly recommended. You can make the tranny do what you want.

The E4 reliability issues are the sensor and wiring. This stuff is antique add in some back woods repairs through the years.
With a 4R100 you will have no choice...
No need to change the adapter, the 4R will bolt up with no problems. C6, E4OD and 4R100 diesel use the same bolt pattern. You will need to use a four stud converter instead of a six stud converter.
What makes the E4OD unreliable is the electronics. The early E4 had some wimpy internals, but...
Reverse and direct (3rd) use the same drum. You can lose reverse and have all forward gears.
The line pressure is on the low side. This could be a weak pump,sticky accumulator valve, worn piston seal, or worn frictions.
The stator seal could have been damaged or incorrectly installed. TCC valve in the pump could be stuck.
Either way to fix it, the tranny needs to be pulled.
Converter clutch fails apply.
Electrical S3 solenoid has failed, or is not getting a signal.
Mechanical, CC control valve is stuck or damaged.
Stator shaft seal is damaged. ( I would look here). This seal is the Teflon seal on the pump. Sometimes they are installed wrong or damaged.
No it was not worth it to redrill the holes. There is no advantage to using a six stud converter. They are the same as a four stud converter. The flex plate is junk now.
