So yes, people have done that. I’ve tried it. I finally came to the conclusion that there’s not enough air going through the stack to heat the spring and get it to engage. Just to catch this thread up, I did fit the 6.4 fan and fan clutch with adapter bushing. I have one trip on it and that combination seems to work pretty well. I haven’t put it to the max stress yet (I-68 with the AC on) but on the trip to Michigan last fall, kicking the fan on kept it cool...- laserjock

Yes there is a shroud. If you go back a few posts, you’ll see it. I just left the top off to watch and make sure it’s running true. As for the bushing, I drew it up and had it machined so now I have a CAD model.- laserjock

I know I’m late to the party, but had it rained since you last parked it? Water in #7 and #8 can happen with a questionable cowl seal. Migh have got just enough to bend it but not hydrolock it. Sorry to hear you’re having issues. These trucks will make us do stupid things.- laserjock

I had my truck frame done for about $250 I think. The wanted another 200 to epoxy prime it. That was a mistake on my part. Should have let them do it. Sand blasting place here in MD.- laserjock

I think your last point is key here. The cooling system was designed for a little over half the horsepower we can make now easily. There has to be a wholistic approach. If you want to make “modern” power you need “modern” cooling to be able to utilize it. That means modifying the cooling system...- laserjock

I think the fan clutch is fine. It is a new motorcraft unit and it is coming on. I think the heat is not getting to the radiator fast enough to bring it on when I need it to. Remember it’s the radiator temp that brings the fan in not the temp in the block. At least for now....- laserjock

Good thoughts guys. Most of the answers are in my build thread. Down shifting to 3rd really does not help that much. I think it’s pretty much hosed by then. I made it to the top but the water temp really did not drop. Top of the list is timing. My meter is a dti tech time. It has worked...- laserjock
