    starter bolt sizes

The issue is with the bolt head; I'm not sure if I can find some with heads for the 1/2" socket instead of a 9/16". Thanks

    starter bolt sizes

Yep. 3/8 coarse, head takes 1/2" socket, the overall length is 1.625" or the length below the head of the bolt is 1.375". If anyone can spare a few, I need some. I'm missing one and the two that I have are crusty (came off plow truck).

Is This a C6 Crank Spacer or E4OD?

Someone in one of the IDI Facebook groups said it depends on the flexplate -- the C6 with the thin flexplate uses this, too. Thanks

Is This a C6 Crank Spacer or E4OD?

I'm going through stuff in my garage to catalog and sell and I've had a few different engines, so not sure which one this came from. I'm pretty sure the C6 and the E4OD transmissions used different spacers; does anyone recognize this one? Thanks

I ended up sending it to Justin/R&D IDI for an upgrade to Stage 1.

Yep. And I enjoy the wrenching that gets it to that point, so everyone is happy.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Yep. I just enjoy working on them, and if I lose $ when I sell them (I certainly will with this one), no big deal. Also, I'm retiring from the Army in mid-July and headed back home to Texas. I have 5 project cars waiting for me there. I can really put Brutus first in the queue, and if it's...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

I think I figured out the issue with the intake valve seals -- the intake guide bosses have been machined down from .626" or so to .562". The seals I ordered were for stock unmachined bosses, so they wouldn't remain in place. Ordered some Viton seals for a .562 valve guide with 3/8" valves so...

    What brakes do you suggest?

For something like this, I'm with CDX825 - name brand stuff from Rock Auto.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm going to end up running exhaust seals. The issue is not that they're tight around the valve (they are; I have .015" oversize stems, but they're umbrella seals so no big deal) but the seal OD is fairly large compared to the ID of the Comp 910 springs. If I can get some...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

More steps backwards this week. Not happy with valve stem seals - the intake seals don't want to stay on and the exhaust seals get caught up in aftermarket springs -- not as much room inside as the OEM springs have. Ordered three different sets of valve seals from Rock Auto; will see if I get...

    Rebuild apprehension with 6.9/7.3idi

I'm almost done with rebuilding a 7.3 IDI turbo, most is or will shortly be on my YouTube channel (link below). Some general thoughts/recommendations - -Get a good heavy duty engine stand. I'm using the $200 one from HF - rated for 2,000 lbs. I would not use anything less substantial than...

Can you take the cylinder heads off without cracking them?

I'd recommend magnafluxing once they're removed. Inexpensive at a machine shop or you can do it at home. I found a crack on my 7.3 heads when I checked mine, and I was seriously upset because they were beautiful low mile heads with excellent seats and valve guides and not warped, either...

    Honing a 7.3 idit

Do NOT use 320 grit. Way too fine. I used 240 for mine and that still wasn't coarse enough. The manual recommends 120 grit, if I recall correctly. As for size, I think Brush Research has the largest selection. Might be worth giving them a call to see what they recommend. If you decide to...

What are IDIs REALLY selling for?

I'm going to find out pretty soon about value. My '87 crew cab DRW F350 7.3 turbo ZF5 4x4 conversion will be for sale soon. I have well over $10k invested, but the plan is to throw it on eBay with no reserve and see what it brings. Hope I don't lose a ton of $.

If you have fab skills and too much time on your hands, that setup would be slick. I don't have a bunch of free time so I just dropped $200 at HF for their 2,000 pound capacity stand...

Crank Spacer - Auto Trans Only?

Ok, so I have disassembled three engines - 6.9 (manual trans), 7.3 x 2 (both auto trans - a C6 and a E40D) - and have parts strewn all over the garage. I have rebuilt one 7.3 and it's going in my '87 CC DRW 4x4 F350 with a ZF-5, single mass flywheel. The thick crankshaft spacer is only for...
