    1994 IDI

Just got my California renewal sticker for next year. A 1994 Ford E350 van. 7.3L, N/A IDI. They did not include anything beside the normal papers. It does not look like this applies to us little guys with the smaller old diesels. I think IDIBronco above nailed it...this is for the big...

    1990 Ford 7.3 idi

Might wanna use an electric fuel pump, even if only temporarily, to guarantee you fuel delivery to the fuel filter, and purging air out of your fuel system. The electric pump could pump clean diesel from a bucket. Of course, the fuel would continue to be returned to the truck`s fuel tank...

    Glow Plug Leak

Check Walmart for gun cleaning brushes? Has anyone used Teflon pipe tape for something like this, or does loctite have high temp sealants for this kind of thing?

DO NOT USE STP S3766 oil filters from AutoZone - warning!

My experience was a couple of years ago... By now I have nothing left but my memory. I am so used to ignorance that I just chalked this one up to some parts clerk not being an experienced mechanic, and sold me the wrong part. Just remember the STP parts don't fit, And stick with Wix. I knew...

DO NOT USE STP S3766 oil filters from AutoZone - warning!

When I first bought my van, I had the same problem. I made a huge mess. STP S3766 .Their book listed it as for me. It's the same size, but seemed to have a different thread pitch. Maybe some sort of SAE vs Metric thing. But I type this in retrospect. This was my first attempt at changing...

Chevron Delo ELC: No, it isn't cheap from Amazon. Some of that seems to be shipping charges folded into the price. But that is the stuff I have been using. I have been getting mine through Southern Counties Lubricants. A friend at NAPA auto parts hooked me up to SCL. So you may have to...

Fuel filter light stays on after filter change

Sounds like an absence of fuel pressure to me. IIRC, that fuel filter sensor just detects lack of fuel pressure at the filter outlet. Mine will turn on if I forget to turn on my electric fuel pump. Air intrusion... Filter empty? Get healthy squirt at the Schrader valve? Something is not...

    Thoughts on potential truck purchase.

FWIW, I paid 3900 for my 1994 IDI van, body and frame in good shape, 300K miles, driveable, but actual engine and transmission condition unknown. Orange County, California. Craigslist listing. At that time, several vans of this vintage were listed for similar prices. This was at the higher...

    7.3 IDI lift pump questions

I like my electric fuel pump as it makes it so much easier to prime the fuel system after filter service or accidental run out of fuel situations. Also I feel a lot more comfortable in fuel system troubleshooting as for many issues, I don't have to have the engine actually running in order to...

Help please...no fuel after IP & injectors

Hose and bucket? Trace back the fuel lines to either collect or supply fuel, and see where the problem is. Anyway, that is what I would do it were my truck. See if I have suction at the lift pump, pressure at the outlet. Hopefully, it's just a kinked hose. Edit: .I see IDIBronco just said...

94 NA, changed starter, cranks won't start - Update

Can you tell by ( looking at / the smell of ) the exhaust if fuel is getting into the engine? What I am getting at is could there be some obstruction in or around the IP that is impeding fuel delivery?

    New plugs wont start now.

Really quick GP test... Take piece of wire, touch to one big terminal of GP relay, gingerly brush other end across other big terminal, as if you were seeing if a battery has any juice in it. Expect Sparks. If you did not get a healthy display, you have either no juice or all your glow plugs...

94 NA, changed starter, cranks won't start - Update

". Spins over fast, have excellent spraying fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. " Geez, maybe the fuel solenoid on the IP isn't happy? Water get into the fuel? Are your glow plugs happy? ( Do you note their load on the battery, as shown on the voltmeter, when you initiate a cold start?)...

    Starter upgrade?

Is the PowerMaster 9050 also good for 7.3 L IDI Ford E350 van? The last starter I used had some sort of dirt shield / snout over the drive gear.

1984 F350 sending unit on 6.9 (will this work?)

Maybe they changed the gauge design from the old thermal bimetallic design to the newer electromagnetic? I have been fishing around with those gauges and am quite impressed with their design. I want to drive them with an Arduino...I have some crazy ideas of repurposing some of the gauges to...

Biting the bullet: Converting to electric fuel pump

Doesn't having an electric fuel pump make it a lot easier when changing fuel filters or (God forbid!) running out of fuel. The electric will repressurize and purge the air out of the fuel system without having to run the engine. That alone swayed me. Just making it easier for me to diagnose...

Critical safety warning: Hot Shots fuel additives products

Forgot about that one, as I no longer am at the beach...but that is a well known one. It's almost identical to sweat, not quite salty as saliva, and it's well known amongst mammals that saliva is a wound cleaner. It was in the blood just a few minutes ago. Unless one is terribly sick, it is...

    I have a clunk when I brake

Loose can of beer? Don't laugh....happened to me once. I guess your spare tire is secure. Seen that too. I'd probably jack the truck up and wiggle the tires to see if any of them are loose..bearing failing, or anything amiss in the differential - U Joint areas.

    Glow Plug Controller Broke Off!

Yup, that last photo is the one I have. I just do not trust that new " exact replacement " contactor. Glad to hear they do not have a history of welding their contacts together. Having contactor contacts weld "closed" was nightmare stuff for me when I used to work in a petrochemical plant.

    Glow Plug Controller Broke Off!

Thanks! I think my 1994 7.3 is made a little different. To the best of my knowledge, my controller does not sense engine temperature. It seems to have one small wire for 12V key on, one small wire for WTS light, one big wire straight to battery, and the other big wire branching out to the...

    Glow Plug Controller Broke Off!

I am a bit puzzled. I have a 94 E350 van, 7.3 L N/A, glow plug controller at the rear of the engine, easily accessible via removal of the dog house in the cab. I flat do not trust that relay. It is claimed to have aluminum contacts. I have had nothing but disaster follow every time I have...

Thanks for posting, Cubey. HotShots Diesel Extreme works well for me. I've been a user since Thewespaul endorsed it in one of his posts. I'll treat my jug of it with a lot more respect thanks to you pointing this out. This seems to be one of the few chemical concoctions that still work...
