Speedo gear is shot:
Throw-out bearing feels good, but probably cheap insurance to just go ahead and replace it.
I noticed the parking brake cables have been rubbing pretty bad against the rear shocks:
The driver side to the point of wearing through not only the plastic sheathing, but...
Figured since I'm this far in, I might as well tear it down the rest of the way. Removed the PTO driveshaft and then the 2 piece main driveshaft. Got both ends freed up and supported while I removed the center support:
Didn't realize at the time that the rear section just pulls out, so I...
I sent 2 oil coolers and 2 IPs to CCD for cores towards a standard IP rebuild. Joe called me the same day the received the cores just to confirm what I wanted (store credit vs. paypal) He was very courteous and I feel like things are going to work out well. Still about 7 weeks out before I'll...
Got the above parts on order.
Did initial rinse of the tanks. The metal one doesn't look that bad inside I don't think:
Looks like the rust spots are all concentrated on the floor, so I'll focus my "shaking" having the tank upright.
These are the pieces I found rattling inside this tank...
Dropped the fuel tanks:
Will get them all cleaned up next and coat the steel one.
Rear frame looks a lot cleaner now:
Fuel sending units:
Unfortunately both measure open. I think these are the correct replacements?
Front:
Rear:
Thanks
I'll put fresh fuel in the truck for sure once I get the engine back in. I might "accidentally" fill it from my 120 gallon off-road tank, at least enough to get me down the road a bit. In my 30 years of driving diesel trucks here in central VA, I have never been pulled over to have my fuel...
Drained both tanks into 4 50 liter clear containers:
I'd say there's maybe 40-45 liters in each container for a total of 160 - 180 liters. That works out to about 42 - 48 gallons.
The fuel out of the rear tank is noticeably lighter in color:
I suspect its a lot older since that tank was...
Found an old .pdf with the specs for the '89 chassis & cab: (I got the 161" wheelbase one)
So 20 gallon front tank and 19 gallon rear tank, for a total of 39 gallons.
I looked into the Detroit locker some more and I don't think that's a good option on a dump truck. I have some steep twisty...
Opened up the fuel tanks and they were both 100% full.
Center tank (metal):
Rear: (plastic)
That little white tab on the sending unit is preventing me from getting it out. Is there a trick to it that I'm missing.
Between the 2 tanks, how diesel do they hold? Is the rear plastic one...
Thanks. I plan on keeping it. The LMC order included a CUSTOM emblem since the passenger side on was missing:
That F-350 emblem looks like crap in comparison now, lol.
With the dump bed removed, I also noticed this on the rear glass:
I think this was a state truck originally given it...
With the bed removed, I'm finally able to take a closer look at the rear section of the truck. Mid fuel tank where you can see how they bypassed the stock fuel line:
Rear fuel tank:
There's more bad wiring to be redone. Plan to replace both tail lights with some nice LED ones.
Diff...
Next up was shifting the truck over to the bay with the lift. Tried picking the whole thing up, but I couldn't get it balanced, so I started by shifting the rear:
Then the front. It was tricky with the hood on, but I managed without touching it:
I then went to the very rear and got it...
Ah clip nuts, of course. I'll see about picking some of those up. Thanks!
Today was finally a nice day, so I rolled the truck outside for the first time in like a year:
Raised the bed up again, and low and behold, turns out the scissor mechanism is only bolted to the frame, not welded. So...
I'll pick up that tool from O'Reilly. Thanks @Old Goat
I'll hold off on the locker until I get further with the project, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to make it up my steep hill with a load of dirt in the dump bed, but I'll find out soon enough.
Got a bunch of parts in Friday and...
Did that before pulling the drum!
Rearmost pad is missing out corner top and bottom:
I'll be tearing all that down and see what needs to be replaced.
Snowing again here in VA again today. Next nice weekend that we have, I'll see about removing the dump bed.
Started running the wire wheel brush on the core support, switching between different shapes and sizes. Will use my small needles scaler in the corners, making sure to be gentle. Did discover one other small crack. Plan to get those welded up before hitting it with POR-15.
I also pulled one...
Pressure washer? Wow, figured that would rip the fabric apart, but maybe not with say a 40 degree nozzle.
Drive up to PA today and picked up the core support. More or less as described. Stripped it down to just the core itself:
While there were no cracks in the 2 common locations like...
The bed is 10' long and 7' wide. I'm guessing it weigh about 3,000 lbs. give or take. My mini ex (Takeuchi TB260) is rated to lift 6,660 lbs. @ 9ft radius and 4,300 lbs. @ 12ft radius, so it should be up to the task I think.
Scored a rear cloth seat out of a 95' today for 100 bucks...
I really want to remove the dump bed so that I'll have much better access to redone the fuel lines and remove/clean the fuel tanks. That will also allow me to put the truck on my lift.
But both the top of the lift mechanism:
And bottom:
Are welded on. Hard to tell from the above pic...
I think I'm missing the springs that keep the doors open:
There should be a tab or something pressing against that roller I would think.
Got the rear cover removed:
Dash view:
Cab still smells like rat **** so I think I'm going to remove the dash and cleanup whatever mess they made...
Spent most of the day cleaning up more parts. Unfortunately I ripped the rubber thingy on the air filter in the process:
Do they still make that guy? I suppose I could wrap some electrical tape around it, but would prefer just getting a new one.
Sorted all the remaining fasteners and misc...
Heat gun helped a lot!
I then tried to test fit it only to discover it was all mangled up where it meets the fender arch. And I tried to fix that side with the heat gun as well, but it started ripping when I tried to bring it back into shape (there was already a white stress line in the...
