Trailered home a 1989 F350 dump truck that looks great on the outside, but the 7.3 IDI is something else

I would bolt it to the passenger side and see if the notch helps to clear the oil dipstick tube...? Just a SWAG...

Rebuilding ZF5, looking for preload shims

I pulled apart a rear axle on a pre-82 Camaro one time that had an Olds engine in it and the ring gear had been shimmed towards the pinion with graph paper....I fixed that and then and went and put a shift-kitted GM THM 200...(yes, a 200 trans..) in it and it ran pretty good. Back to the ZF...

    Transfer case chain slack?

I really could not tell you other than I believe that I saw that name on a lot of OEM chains that I re-installed when I freshened up TFC's for a lot of folks. Any used chain is going to be tough to get squeaky-clean with hand-washing methods...not that it really matters...just sayin'...TFC's...

    Transfer case chain slack?

Is the output shaft moving when you pull the chain to the case..? That would give you a false impression. It would be good to have a helper hold the shaft steady while you are SWAG-ing the chain wear. I used to scribe the inside of the case while pushing the chain in and then scribe it again...

    Transfer case chain slack?

IMHO I would guess that as long as your T-case was never run low on lubricant you probably are ok with your original chain unless 4x4 was used a lot during its life. By "used a lot" I mean over half of the total miles accumulated...and/or 4x4 was used towing really heavy loads. I built a lot...

    ZF Tailhousing swap

Short answer is yes. You would have to fab up a support for the heavy end. The same thing happens to a Dodge 4X4 when the front driveshaft CV joint goes bad...the vibrations will crack the extension housing on the trans. The aftermarket has come up with a bolt-in support for the Dodges...I...

ZF5 Problem Jumping out of 4th

I tried to not say anything but I just can't stop myself from offering my tinhorn armchair quarterback opinion on the things that scream at me on this one..... First...I have never been a fan of using a 460 case behind a 6.9-7.3 diesel... Yes, I am sure there are some who have done it and it...

    Tachometer

I have used that method from time-to-time on various things...I think that 'they' call that ....'Percussive Maintenance'.... Works good for light bulbs that want to not work right before a safety inspection....

    Tachometer Troubleshooting

Jumping in with a coupla thoughts... @david85 , that was great input ! @ROCK HARVEY , I always appreciate your thoughts. @Kizer , good input as well... On the electricals...I have nothing to add at the moment...still groggy from the week...but on the tach that was shown... At least it was...

7.3 idi throttle position sensor question

@ifrythings knows what he is talking about...something is wwrrooooonngg with the electicals...the only thing that I would chime in with is to get a good DVOM and check what each wire to the sensor is doing with KOEO both unplugged from the sensor and then plugged in and back probing. Then you...

    E40D advice

This is a job for @trackspeeder ...but...I have a feeling that he will advise you to fix the code 14 first and then clear the codes, drive it and see if the other code comes back. If we knew if your unit and convertor is original or has been worked on before and how many miles are on the system...

    Punisher valve bodies?

Thanks, Buddy, My face is reddening up as I type this. I quit cigarettes many a moon ago...;) Along those lines I would like to give credit to a lot of folks here on this site...I have learned something from each and every one of you-all and I believe that everyone has something to...

    Punisher valve bodies?

I should not chime in on this one...but I did have a first-hand experience that involved one of the companies mentioned... It was a unit that 'they' had 'built' and sold to a guy and it failed as soon as it was installed and test driven. I was asked to look into it and what I found is the unit...

    Arduino Glow-plug Controller, Build & Walk-through

You got my attention... Is that a 5-speed with a high-low unit..? I would not mind tackling that one... I might gripe a little at first...at the driver not knowing how to drive or the PM guy not keeping it full of oil... I appreciate the thinking along these lines and if I was a sparkhead I...

    Vacuum pump teardown

Probably not enough alloy in the cast iron... I am so glad to hear you say that...I used to dumpster dive at my old job...and I have used a lot of stuff that I dragged out... I used packing material as insulation for a well box that I built last year...to keep the temporary water system from...

Does this look Welded to You?

Yeah, 'professional'... Two things come to mind when I read the first part of this... A long time ago I had a pretty sharp guy come into my office to have me do some work for him...and he quizzed me at some point...with a ??.. "What is the definition of an 'expert'...?" I had no clue where...

    Screwed up parts databases?

Around 1990 I was interested in having a 4X4 van and I had asked a dealer about it. I was told that you could get it specially built...you ordered an F-150 chassis (4X4) and had the van body placed on it... I did not go through with it...just was going through a flight of fancy... I should...

    New 7.3 IDI Owner Here

So...that's where the little son-of-a-nugget-eater is tucked away.... Now we all know...good for future reference... Thanks for doing the heavy lifting (no pun intended...moving the battery...you know...) on that so we all can benefit from it. Yeah...we (the transmission rebuilder community)...

    Finally gonna rebuild my ZF-5!

I never trusted the grease that bearings and u-joints come with...best I could guess is that it was only good for keeping the parts from rusting on the shelf... I would always clean them out and use a good moly grease. I do agree with making sure the bearings are a good brand and not using...

    New age headlights

Looks a lot like a human face to be freaked out about in your rear-view mirror.... All that front end needs now is a pair of eyebrows painted on the hood...just above those eyes... or...if you are into extra fuzz...a unibrow... I was straining my head trying to figure out how to give it a...
