I'm using it exclusively as a towpig,
Best to date was coming up hwy 5 over the grapevine babying it empty with stock size tires @14 it had 37k on the clock.
I watched it go down from there.
Towing @ that time, 11.
Right before I swapped pumps it was down to 8-9 on the same trip to the same...
Ok,
So here's what Russ told me just before he died R.I.P. ...
My truck now has 60 k original miles on it, I was chasing my tail about crappy mpg's.
It was probably @55k or so, we talked about it in detail and his answer was the pump needed a rebuild in spite of the low mileage but because of...
Ok so in 3 pages , we've not answered, how many miles are on the pump?
Anything over 125k, and there's nothing much left, yes they will run for a few hunnert k but not like a new pump will....
I Doubt it died inside of any timeline you have seen.
Heat sink, they'll run when cooled off.
Air they'll run once purged.
Gummed up, often, not so much.
Hard to kill one on the highway cruising.
My friends 6.9 had 500k on it and multiple pumps( read 4+) your missing something.
There's a lot...
For grins throw a can of techron in each full tank and let it sit so it can clean the rheostat for the senders...
mine went stupid once and that and a dose of bio cide cleared it up.
The biocide was just in case...
Bottom of para. 1 in post #1, it started on the e pump, but the mechanical pump was puking...
Was it just residual or was it looking like it was working properly?
If it's now not, ( post#5) that's going to be a "Let's dive deep into the thing" deal.
As for the rear bolt, at home with everything...
Feed the mechanical pump from a fresh can of fuel.
Check the 12v to the i.p. (especially the fuel valve.)
If it's not hot it won't run.
Then chase fuel path rearward from i.p. for blockage...
That's a new one on me for these rigs...
But yeah kinda has to be in the switching/returns...
Try repeated tank changes, also back blow the tanks, open the caps and run low psi air from the front
Deoxit spray works great for inside connector plugs,

Best degreaser of your choice.
Place rad on flat surface hose spigot up, leave cap on, petcock closed, pump thru one side, collect from the other.
Repeating till your happy.
Alternatively you can jack shop air into the feed side to help scrub...
Idi bronco has a point....
Been a minute since I looked, isn't there a return or feed check ball for the i.p. ( seems there’s acheck on the ip? Yes?)(return to tank in the filter head has 1.)
If its leaking then the ip is starved...
Fwiw
I had the schrader core unscrew inside the plastick cap...
