    7.3 running hot

That's good you have an actual temp gauge. The factory ones aren't known for their accuracy. Like I said, next time I'd get a cheap gauge and screw it in place of the petcock on the lower radiator tank. Then you'll know if the radiator and fan are working good, or if there inadequate.

    7.3 running hot

Still have the fan shroud installed? AC condenser and trans cooler clean? No chrome grill inserts or anything else goofy up front? If you want to, buy a cheap npt coolant temp gauge and screw it into the lower radiator tank. Knowing that temp will tell you if your radiator/fan is or isn't up to...

    Somebody better buy this truck!

That's a few miles from me. It's in great shape, but it's nearly 30 years old. I was watching it for a minute, hoping to get a creampuff for a deal, but that's not going to happen lol. I know some guys that work for the village and they can't believe what it's going for.

Oh, you were a rebuilder and not the machinist. I'd consider myself a rebuilder as well, but the only local machinist I trust always seems to be out a month. Some jobs we can't wait that long, so I dig the old sioux/lisle/kline tools out from under the bench and do it myself.

    A Post I Don't Want To Make

If you're not interested in fixing it, there's no point in tearing it down further. You've eliminated most of the easy repairs by removing the valve covers. The only other thing I'd suggest is an injector inspection/pop test, but if you're thinking one of the cylinders is down on compression...

Good stuff. Hands on experience is invaluable. I'm sure a few of those heads hit another 100k+ miles after rebuild. IIRC, k-line liners are phosphor bronze, which are pretty strong/anti-wear. Some of the early bronze guides/liners used were too soft an alloy and wore/hammered out really...

Those look to be cast, so stick with the umbrella seals imo. Bronze has a self lubrication property and can get away with a lot tighter clearance/less oil then what cast guide can. The problem is that bronze doesn't seem as durable as cast, so they seem to wear out quicker. There's a lot of...

What guide material are you using? If it's cast, stick with the umbrellas on the left. If they're putting bronze liners in them, go with the positive seals on the right. JMO

Well, looks like you're headed to the machine shop. They can surface the head for you while you're there.

I'd think bad rocker over dropped valve. Pull the covers and check. I know it's an immediate heart drop, but all might not be lost. FWIW, When I've seen dropped valves, that were still somehow running, they seem to run a whole lot worse then this. Most wouldn't run.

The controller won't like the plugs, but the relay and push button won't care  I sure love mine. Them and a racor fuel filter/water separator that doesn't leak like the pos wix filter it replaced. Now the bus starts in half a revolution.

So what did you do with your truck today?

I'm not surprised with such low stock. The manufacturer(felpro) is out if I'm reading hacked89 correctly, so you eta from jegs, summit, and everybody else shipping direct from felpro would be 15 months. Call your napa store personally. There might not be exactly 3, as warehouses tend to show...

So what did you do with your truck today?

That's crazy. I just looked and I show 3 left in all of the napa warehouses. Some stores might have it on their shelf, as those stock levels aren't directly available to me. But 3........ Crazy times to be in right now.

Buying 85 IDI ATS turbo motorhome!

Seals might work, so long as the surface they ride on is okay shape. A few years ago, I rebuilt the gearbox in the school bus because it was leaking out the sector shaft seal. The reason it leaked was because rust crept past the seal and tore it up. So I chucked the shaft in my lathe, polished...

Buying 85 IDI ATS turbo motorhome!

Those stop leaks just swell the seals in the system to tighten them up. It's okay if it works to get you home, but plan on replacing what was leaking in the first place, because it will be back. I've used a transmission version of that to get us back home to Ohio from Tennessee. It worked to get...

I've noticed it to. In another thread I wrote " ride h@rd on the chamfer" and it censored h@rd on like a curse wordLOL

Well, at least they hung the rods on the pistons correctly. A simple flip and you're back in business. I'll 2nd the cork gasket. Use a tube of the right stuff and forget about it. I don't think I've ever had a cork gasket not leak/weep. Do you have a micrometer hone, or one of those 3 arm...

Chamfer goes toward the radius on the crank journal. You can see it pointing at with the red arrow here. If the rod would be flipped along with the piston, the square end on the right would now be on the left, and it would be clamped tight on the fillet of the crank journal.

Was this rebuilt and then ran? Why do the pistons have carbon on them if it's rebuilt? Good catch on the pistons being flipped. Check that the chamfer on the rods is pointing the correct way, with the pistons flipped, who knows what they got going on. A complete disassembly and reassembly might...

I assume your heads are rebuilt units? If not, I'd look into a rebuilt set of 7.3 heads before I'd drill your used set. Heads/valves/guides seem to wear quickly on the idi platform. So make sure they're good before reinstalling them. Regarding drilling the heads, unless you have a heavy duty...

    Self oil burning

Carry on then. When I did it, I started with 60 grit, then 320, then 1000 w/ wd40 as a lube. This was with an alloy headed hemi and a mls gasket. Cast iron and a composite gasket, you can likely stop after 320. Surface finish is important but flatness is importanter. If you stuff rags in it...

    Self oil burning

I've seen/used a piece of 2x4 inch steel tube, wrapped with a 9x11 sheet of sand paper as a quick diy resurface job. But you have to religiously wash the cylinders after, or the grit will wipe out your rings/cylinders in no time. It's not something I'd really attempt to do on an assembled short...

How to install facet as prime pump

I've always thought running a mechanical and electric pump parallel would be good for fuel filter changes at a minimum. I'm not a fan of using it to bandaid intrusion issues, but I understand that you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Know that the way some pumps are designed, check valves...

    1987 Crew Cab 2WD Build

Glad to see this was resolved. I've been in the same boat. Ordered something, place it on the shelf, go to install it months(or years) later, and find out it was damaged before packaging and now I'm well past the return window. In my situation, I purchased another from the same seller, swapped...

    Glow Plug borescope picture help

At one time, there was an image of a head cut in half down the middle of the pre-cup on here. And IIRC, neither the glow plug or the injector offer a straight shot into the cylinder through the hole in the pre-cup. One of the old members was the one that cut the head and painted it, maybe russ...
