6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

Stall speed is based off of torque applied, torque ratio of the converter, and rpm. There is a way to figure it, and I went through a bunch of calculations and stuff at one time to do so, and I think I came up with a little over 2000 rpm for the at545/IDI combo and the stock "diesel" converter...

Okay, perfect then. I thought it was a before and after shot of the same bearings, with the after being what you "cleaned".

If those bearings in the 2nd picture are what you're using, they're junk. I've used scotch brite to clean up burrs or discoloration on bearings, but never sand paper. The grit will embed into the bearing and wear out the crank. That's a tri-metal bearing and you're through the first layer of...

Things that make you go Hmmmmmm

IMO 3500 is too cheap for a crew cab srw diesel. Even if all the other chit is a lie and it's bone stock na idi lol. scam for sure.

6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

Good score on the radiator. I feel that's the best deal for you at this point. Check your fan clutch too. If it's not audibly on for 30 seconds to a minute at start up, it's likely no good. I'd recommend you enjoy it like it is now. I love mine, but it's night and day different compared to...

    Good by and good luck!

IDK, from what I read, you both stepped on each others toes, each of you got offended by it, and then you both escalated it to a bunch of back and forth childish name calling. "You're a bigger a-hole","no you are","no you are". I'd suggest you both grow up, and also toughen up. You're going to...

    Napa warranty from noncorporate stores?

Advance, o'reilly and autozone are all corporate. Napa and carquest are franchised. Napa should be able to warranty that so long as you have a receipt. They might buck around about it, as they're not making anything by doing it, but they aren't losing anything either. When you purchase a part...

6.9 timing Where did the 8.5* come from

12g's are junk. I tested all of mine before install and you can read about it here https://www.oilburners.net/threads/glow-plugs-6-9.84881/#post-1017290 I put 60g's in mine, and they work well yet. They need cut or ground to fit, so if you want a self limiting plug, bosch 80034 will fit without...

6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

There's a place an hour away that still does brass radiator repairs. Last one I sent out for recore was a year or so ago for a stationary gen set, and it came to a little more then 2k. Not cheap, but the quality was 2nd to none and it works great. I see horror stories all the time from people...

6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

Was the new radiator a side by side unit or full sized? I've read on people installing the full sized radiator/intercooler out of the 4900's into the 3800, but never seen it with my own eyes. Those half and half jobs always ran warm in my experience, especially in the summer.

6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

New vs old radiator. The cooling ability depends on the size of the tubes as much as the count. You'll gain a little more surface area internally due to more tubes, but if it's still a 2" thick core, it's still a 2" thick core. TBH fin count and spacing has as much or more to do with radiator...

6.9 in a bus needs radiator. Upgrades?

Run the full size radiator. Those half and half jobs are marginal at best on the buses they're on. The IDI platform dumps a lot more heat into the cooling system, compared to a DI design. And all of the DI engines that have that half and half setup are borderline overheating in my experience...

    Self oil burning

I doubt any machinist would have cut more then 4 if it would have cleaned up at 4. If he's any good, he'll make it work some way. Look into head saver shims if you have to.

Let’s talk about egts and water temp

Didn't know that one. Not sure on how big of a size difference between the two there is, but any size difference could contribute to an overheat issue due to slow water pump/fan speed.

Let’s talk about egts and water temp

Agreed. Those numbers will show how efficient the radiator/fan is working. I'm not sure on the 10 degree number, but I've never checked one that was functioning normally to know what it's supposed to be. Typically I'll see no change(poor fan/air flow) or too much of a change(clogged radiator)

    Zf6 synchros

Yes and no. Certain transmissions(toploaders, muncies, tremecs, etc) you can "faceplate", which replaces the synchronizers on the gears with a dog clutch setup, making it unsychrnoized like you're after. They do it in racing transmissions where synchronizers aren't necessary, but reliable...

    7.3idi decarbonizing water steam

For water to work at cleaning chambers, you also have to have heat. Gas engines don't have an issue with heat at idle, but diesels do. So I'd say any cleaning you want to do should be done while the engine is under load/making heat. Like rvitko said, it real easy to find a bad head gasket...

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

He's right, in that the common chart that's shared is incorrect, you can run over 160 and get 100k+ miles out of a trans. But I still wouldn't suggest going over 300. Over 300 the base oil might be fine, but the additives might not be. And at 300 degrees, the oil isn't lubricating or cooling...

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

I guess where you place it is based on what you're after. I monitor converter out because I want to make sure I don't cook the transmission fluid. Anything over 300 and the fluid is cooked and it needs replaced. The converter out will be the hottest spot for the transmission fluid. If that's...

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

IDK. I'm a mechanic and what other guys/shops do sometimes is baffling. If cubey was complaining about costs and stuff while he was there, the guy is probably hesitant on flushing it because a possible radiator repair/replacement isn't cheap. And if stuff goes wrong, it's often times difficult...

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

Converter out/before the cooler is where I'd have it, as that will be the hottest point of your transmission. I wouldn't put it after the cooler, I really don't know why they'd tell you that, or what the point/benefit of seeing that would be. The only other place I'd consider would be a sender...

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

You can try it, but it's not going to work. If you're hitting 220 stop and go, you'll be through the roof the first long grade. It's easier to fix it now, and fix it right, then it will be to find a case of atf along snoqualmie pass after you puke the trans contents along the interstate.
  23. B

Transmission shop near Yakima? (or Puyallup)

Do not bypass the water-oil trans cooler. Air-oil coolers don't have near the capacity that a water-oil one has. You'll cook the new transmission at the first large hill. You might get away with doing that on a car or lightly loaded truck, but that RV is a lot heavier and harder on the trans...

    idi vs di for wmo

Agreed, I feel the IDI's pintle nozzle would have less of a chance of plugging or coking from the heavy fuel then a DI's multi-hole nozzle. Only time I've seen IDI's have issues with wmo is due to lack of filtration or too much idle/low load time. Keep it clean and get it hot and it will burn well.
  25. B

    Actually retrieving WMO

That's a centrifugal pump, so it's not positive displacement. Would probably work okay so long as the oil is warm/thin. If it's winter thick I don't think it will work well.
