    1992 f250 dana 50 auto locking hub

    People replace them because they fail. They work fine for just needing 4x here and there, and relitively gentle use. Use them with tire chains, or get stuck and try to rock it back and forth....that usually will fail them.

    Had to look it up, looks like maybe 95+came with the bolt on tube. Crazy that only 2 or 3 of them I have been into are that way. Seen many without the bolt in tube. Have 3 sitting here (89,91, and 96) the 96 has the externally replaceable seal.

    Only the later ones with the bolt on on throwout bearing tube are that way. The rest of them are replaced from inside the case.

    as far as the trucks, the gm is a nicer truck, and the real crewcab is nice if you can deal with the length of the truck. Those trucks typically drive really nice as well. The dodge is ok, typically drive poor without doing 3rd-4th gen style steering stuff. But with the newer steering stuff...

    Broken crankshafts, blown head gaskets, pmd issues, those will be the days of your 6.5 life. I do like the 6.2 and 6.5s, but reality is that a p pump 12 valve motor will more than likey give no trouble.....as long as the dowel pin is fixed.

    I bet if you start it cold and slowly increase the rpm to 2k it will begin to smoke and run rough.

    Everything is just speculation at this point, but cylinder heat can come up quite a bit with some load. Timing typically retards slightly with throttle position....why it might not smoke while idling. Does the cold advance work?

    Is it using any coolant? Most likely just slightly retarded timing or a slightly leaky injector. Little more engine heat covers it up.

    If running it from a fuel can fixed the problem, next stop for me would be looking at the tank valve. Did it on both tanks, right?

    Bought a new truck, cant get it started. No fuel coming out of the injection pump.

    Could also remove the return fitting and see if fuel flows out while cranking.

    New lift pumps are garbage. Run a hose from a fuel can to the lift pump and see what it does for pressure then.

    Is there a circular crack there? If nothing is broken, I would clean it up good and fill that cavity with ultra grey.

    Thanks for the input. I might try to contact cdd again, and maybe put a pallet of stuff together. Have many valve covers, a few intakes and a pile of oil coolers. Dont really have a need for store credit though, as expensive as fuel system parts are for the idi now, and since this 7.3 was worn...

    Changing that seal is like changing any other shaft seal. No big deal. Pretty weird though that every zf6 that I have had out, that seal was leaking....

    Have 10-15 maybe more 6.9 7.3 injection pump cores. I am know that some of them were running fine, but unfortunately stuff was not labeled, and has been moved around and I just dont remember. Also have incomplete pumps and pump parts. What do I do with this stuff? Will be keeping a couple...

    When you cranked on it with the top off of the pump, did the fuel level in the housing rise? Also, make sure the pump driveshaft isnt sheared.

    Has anyone ever tried maxing out cetane boost in synthetic WMO to avoid friggin' around with the timing?

    Never felt that I needed to adjust timing with all of the various mixes that I did.
