Oh gotcha. I can almost guarantee that a $230 champion rad would have cured your overheating issues with that truck :/.
Good luck with your next truck! I can tell you that a Cummins will tow much better than an idi any day of the week.
The stock 7.3 idi GPC, when working correctly, actually works quite well. A push button system for glowplugs is a great way to burn them up. One second too long and puff, they go out like a blown out candle.
The GPC cycles the glows which prevents them from overheating.
Did you replace the injectors when you put a new IP on? It's highly recommended that you replace both the IP & injectors at the same time.
A junior moose pump will produce smoke, but it sounds like your truck needs to be professionally timed. That may help reduce emissions.
Do you still have the truck???
If so, a new champion rad & maybe a re-gear will be cheaper than buying someone else's truck that might also turn into another project. Just my .02. Trying to look out for ya
Hate to say it, but I bet a 3-4 row Rodney red or Champion radiator would have fixed your overheating problems. My original rad was in good shape and squeaky clean, but decided to replace it anyways. Immediately saw a 15 degree drop in temps...
Autozone has them with a lifetime warranty. They seem to only last about 5 years before they need replacement, regardless of the brand. That's been my experience with em...
E40d's are anything but mechanical lol. Having said that, I know nothing about those transmissions. But his scenario does sound a little oddball. Curious to know what the actually problem is.
Kind of sounds like something electrical might be malfunctioning. However, transmission fluid puking from dipstick tube is a definate mechanical problem. Good thing you got a spare ready to go in.
Sounds like you had a fun time! That drive absolutely sucks tho. Especially driving thru LA.
Glad the truck made it ok too. SoCal isn't used to seeing trucks like that. They like their Prius matchboxes a little too much -Lame
That's an indication that you are probably due for a new injection system in the near future. I would recommend renting Gary's (icanfixall) timing meter if you want to check the timing. It may help the hard starting when hot prob, but it still sounds like it's due for a replacement if it's old &...
Like mentioned before, filling the fan clutch with oil is a good temporary fix. Not a long term fix. If your clutch doesn't have any oil in it, where did it go? Answer to that is the seals are shot and it will eventually all leak out again. Engine cooling systems aren't an area to go cheap on imo.
Looks like you found the prob with that fan clutch.
Also, no overdrive while towing. That's not a modern diesel where you can get away with towing in OD because it has 800ft/lbs torque. It probably doesn't even have half that.
Having said that, it'll get you wherever you need to go, as they...
Just delt with my 6.7 psd batteries taking a dump on me last Monday. Tried to charge them so I could at least drive the truck to my mechanic when one of the batteries started to boil over. Sounded like it was about to explode lol. Man did it get hot too.
Bought two AGM batteries from Autozone...
Ehh.....probably wouldn't trust a 5 lug assembly on the front end of these f250's. The engines are HEAVY and would likely snap off the studs at some point.
^^^ Good point. It really wouldnt be that difficult to have a test vehicle make some dyno runs to see what they actually make. Of course, there's lots of variables such as engine health & various turbo designs that could potentially change results.
I'm guessing you got the E40D in there. That sounds about right for that transmission needing a rebuild 4x. Sounds like he maxed out the towing capabilities of that truck one too many times. You would think after the second breakdown, he would have realized his need for a heavier duty truck...
I would keep your current 7.3 idi filter head, as you are able to use a filter with a water separator integrated in it. That's pretty important when running a diesel. The 6.9's had a separate water seperator & the filter head they used didn't allow for a water seperator/filter to be used, just a...
Start by hooking up that heater core. If you still have problems, it's probably because these a/c systems were never designed to run propane in them. I bet your compressor will eventually go out running that stuff in the lines too.
Converting to R-134a will ensure a long lasting a/c system...
