    Having problems installing zf5

I had blocks under the wheels, but mostly just because the bellhousing wouldn't slide under the truck. After sliding the trans under the truck, I lowered it back down, because it ended up being too high. Although it is now too low:frustrate. It's tight under there Rock

    Having problems installing zf5

I may try jacking up the motor. I have been spinning the input shaft by turning the output shaft with the tranny in gear. Thanks Rock

    Having problems installing zf5

The transmission is currently in gear, and I was using the output shaft of the transmission to turn the splines for lining up. The transfer case isn't on yet. Do you think I would be better off with the transfer case on? I figured it would be easier to put the transfer case on later, but I don't...

    Having problems installing zf5

I think you're right. It's one big optical illusion every time I look at it. I was able to turn the tranny enough to get the holes lined up, but it definitely feels like the tail end needs to come up a ways. I may try jacking the rear up to help a little. I'm gonna pull those measurements this...

    Having problems installing zf5

I will double check the throwout bearing tomorrow, but I had previously made sure it didn't slip off before each time I raised the tranny up and slid it in. That would be nice if it just slipped off though. I'm getting sick of this. Rock

that was the first thing I did to be sure I had the right clutch. Slid right on. The tranny is still 2 1/2 inches away Rock

    Having problems installing zf5

Good evening, I am having more than my share of difficulty installing a zf5 in my 87 6.9. A little background- My truck was a t19, but I decided last month to swap in the zf5 I have that was in an f super duty behind a 7.3 idi. I installed a luk clutch for the zf5 and used the dual mass fly...

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

Hard starting would be more of a drain back problem, there's not really any way for a return line leak to back feed air through the IP/injectors, and cause the fuel supply to lose pressure. I suppose the return line on the fuel filter could though. Rock

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

Air intrusion in the return system shouldn't cause hard starting since it's after the injectors, but will just cause the motor to surge and lope. Hard starting is air intrusion in the supply system. Those smalls e pumps seem to have trouble pulling fuel up out of the tank. Rock

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

There should be a vent hose on the fuel tank(s). You can try running it without the cap, but it doesn't really sound like a venting issue. Those 2 steel lines are the 2 that gave me trouble. Very hard to see pinholes on those lines. Rock

So what did you do with your truck today?

Yup, that's one way to put it:frustrate. He is doing alright, just having to take 3 weeks off work now. I feel real bad about the whole thing, but it is what it is. I will never buy a harbor freight jack or hoist again, could've been much worse. Thank you for the concern. Rock

So what did you do with your truck today?

So it's been a while since I actually got anything done to the 87 due to work. Monday I had my dad helping me line up the zf5 under the truck. I bought a Horror freight tranny jack and things were going well until we thought it would be a good idea to put an impact on the jack to raise it...

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

I had that happen to my 87. I took me quite a while to find it because it rubbed through on top of a bend in the line. No fuel ever leaked out but it would surge something terrible, and drove me crazy so I pulled all the lines and later found it because of that. Rock

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

I would have to think the smoke on startup is related, unless it is just a coincidence and out of time like you said. One of my trucks has a real bad case of air intrusion, and is good for smoking out mosquitoes on startup, lol. That truck has 2 cross threaded injector lines that don't seal...

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

One detail we need is, does the air intrusion cause your truck to start hard or to just run like crap? If it's only when running, look at the return lines, if starting hard, then look at fuel supply system. Rock

Heck, I really trusted the PO of my 87...............until I saw three u joints were welded in place.....yup. That's why I am tearing it apart now. Rock

    6.9 idi air intrusion!!!

If you haven't already, I would suggest replacing all the low pressure fuel lines first. They commonly get pin holes that aren't visible, but cause what you describe. The metal lines are the worst. That's cheap insurance anyway. Also, you should get at least the primary fuel filter back on there...

    Clutch fork

I am assuming you removed the plastic retainer strap that came on the new slave? If so, you're gonna have a heck of a time getting it in without that. If possible, put the retainer back on, slip the slave in, and then release the tabs on the retainer but keep it on the end of the rod so it...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I haven't really dealt with grill guards, but the old fashioned plow mounts are more or less the same in terms of hassle, so I would have to agree. If there is no guard on the bumper, it would be one nice big step though I imagine Rock

    6.9 IDI at a loss.

Have you replaced the air filter? Black smoke is from too little air or too much fuel. I would suggest pulling the air filter off to see if it makes a difference, but don't run it long without the filter. Air intrusion wouldn't cause black smoke like that, but will cause the rpms to surge at...
