Correct. I actually just read a super old thread where two of our members who sadly are no longer with us helped someone with this exact issue. Had an old tractor starter cable and it works normally.
I guess I need to find a mega fuse instead of leaving this right on the positive battery...
Just switched the relay from my 6.9 and nothing. Jump big terminals and nothing. Relay clicks every time I press the button. It's like the 12v at the battery plus of the relay is fake. Honest to god this is unreal.
Went to go to work this morning, 6.9 already dead in driveway with likely bent connecting rod. Get in my considerably nicer 7.3 and push my glow plugs and nothing. I have them wired manually with the ground method to a push button, my wts light flashes so I know the relay is getting the signal...
No, just when neither valve was getting pushed down. I'll try again tonight and take the rockers off 8. Guess it won't hurt to pull the pushrods and look at them also.
Great. Now I'm undecided whether I tear into this thing or just flip it and get it out of here for cheap.
I'm leaning towards bent rod still, I watched the valves moving and they seem to have same travel as others beside them. I'd think if the seat was bad it wouldn't stay at 130 pounds of air...
Hmm. Any good way to tell if it's more likely a bent rod in the engine before I'd go through trying to do that? I don't mind attempting to yank the head off the driver's side if the truck is ***** to me anyways, but if I can save going through the hassle I might.
So the plot thickens, maybe?
I got a compression tester at harbor freight that is mostly correct, the gauge just only goes to 300 but I figured my issue won't make 300 anyways so it will at least help me figure out which cylinder is angry. Every cylinder but #8 quickly shot well over 300, not...
If I knew I could spend between I don't know 1500-2000 to fix it I would, mainly because of having spent 2000 on pump/injectors/ac system. It's hard to find a beater without holes in it that is 4wd. I can take all that out but it's not like my other trucks need it.
I'm still gonna do a...
All motorcraft. Sadly. They look like they've been gone for a bit, at least since it started to run like garbage broken edge had seen combustion. Burnt with carbon on the bottom.
#7 and #8 glow plugs missing a good 3/4 an inch of the plug. Got them out finally. No clue how long they've been gone.
I can crank the engine over without the glow plugs and there's no noises. Just massive hissing out the glow plug holes. No holes appear totally dead, I sprayed pb blaster down...
Nope new 2 years ago from Mel and injectors. Definitely not fuel as if I rev it up and shut it off the noise continues.
Now I can't get 5,7, and 8s glow plugs to come out. Tried to crank the engine and shoot them our, just not happening.
I'm honestly to the someone just come take it stage...
What compression tester can I get that I can test from the glow plug hole? My area doesn't have the harbor freight one that goes through the glow plugs that everyone commonly gets.
I do think it sounded like it struggled on one compression stroke on a cylinder. I can't be sure. It starts fine now, just starts aggressively tapping on a cylinder like a fuel knock, high pitched raspy tapping noise. Has a miss that is noticeable between 800-1200 rpm, fades up high or at low...
Hour north of there. Kittanning.
I took the passenger side valve cover off also. I don't see anything wrong here either.
So honestly I have no idea. No signs of a bad head gasket, the smoke and miss makes no sense with each injector hurting the engine the same, I don't get how it's clacking...
I still think I heard a "snap" when it started this morning on the first compression revolution once it made a complete turn of the engine. Can't be sure, I've tried to think back.
The clacking is pretty audible.. at least from the outside of the truck. It sounds very similar to an old 300 I had that always had a tapping when started cold after a few days of sitting, but it didn't miss while it did it, just made noise. This for sure is running dead on that cylinder. Oddly...
Yeah I'm gonna pull one when I get home. I couldn't tell which side it sounded like it was coming from. It's strange, didn't make a sound last time I started it, now this. I almost think water got through the intake but the air cleaner lid grommet thing doesn't appear to leak if I poured water...
Got up for work today and fired up the 6.9 and was greeted by horrid clacking.
I'm guessing that I've somehow dropped a valve, between the smoke and clatter which is constant with rpm, engine shakes like 1 is missing.
I've done a lot more than I ever thought I would with these trucks, hell...
Everything works, I'm just fearful of what the random jumper wires added in through the front of the fuses are doing if they're hot all the time and not just with the key on.
