    Opinions on oil

I have used nothing but full synthetic since the mid seventies. I have been using Rotella T6 since shortly after I got the IDI, and immediately after I got the 2001 PSD. After cornering every oil company at SEMA for two years regarding flat valve lifters in gas engines, I now use T6 in...

Locker install in a 2wd open rear unit

The term "locker" has gotten seriously abused. I put a Ford clutch pack ("limited slip") in a nine inch in a pickup decades ago. The clutches lasted about six months. I then put a Detroit locker in a that nine inch. The first time I dug two equal holes in gravel I knew I had something that...

4.10 to 3.55 swap for $85 -- worth it? (Rear only)

So your top gear is about the same as mine. 3.55 works fine here.

    Best starting aid?

The current Walmart starting fluid is Heptane, Ether and Liquified Petroleum Gas. In 2008, on a cross country trip, I was chasing injector O ring leaks. We pulled into a rest stop, I worked with a leaking O ring, and then could not start. I tried to start for six hours. Then a guy came along...

4.10 to 3.55 swap for $85 -- worth it? (Rear only)

What is your trans? Will 3.55 be the final ratio? My van is 9K#. I get about 5# of boost under rather heavy power. I have 3.55 with a 0.7 OD which gives a final of about 2.5. It works fine over the road. On hills and/or with a trailer I gear down. Cross country with no trailer it gets...

IDM questions / buzz test code

When you recommend a Ford under valve cover harness, it would be useful to note that Ford gaskets, harness and pigtail will ruin $500.

    I'm working on a 1984 F800 with a 429 gasser, what are the possibilities ?

My 84 E350, 460 came with a Holly that had four idle jets. I got rid of it rather quick. For a couple decades I have been running Q Jets on a 351W, 351C and a 460. They have served me very well. Some Ford 429/460 had Q Jet/Thermoquad spread bore manifolds. I used aftermarket manifolds for...

LED Headlight Bulbs in lieu of Relay

I have long been using relays to get all of the high current stuff out of the cab. I control things with mini toggle switches. These are standard relays, and the connectors are side linking. I have a half dozen mounted with just two screws...

Balance the rotating assembly on a rebuild?

I have assembled and had built a bunch of gas engines. I had them all balanced. I recently bought a 94 turbo reman. When I couldn't find a turbo flex plate I pulled the rotating assembly and had it balanced to match the non turbo flexplate/flywheel. My vibration indicator is a Yoda bobble...

    Gas tank for Diesel?

Two of my three tanks are steel and started as gas in 2005. I have been using a 2 micron Racor for at least 10 years. See two pics. https://photos.app.goo.gl/aNYKeULJrLzBkzjM9

How did you get into an IDI?

I am in CA. In 2005 my 84 E350 460 engine was at a shop for three days. He could find nothing to fix but could not get it to pass SMOG check. No charge. I bought an 89 E350 for it's IDI engine. Diesel less than 1997, no OBD II, no SMOG check. Mileage went from 10 to 15.

    Glow plug connectors-really good ones

Look at this connector. There is a close up in the following pic. I installed a set right after I first installed the IDI. The insulation is shrink tubing. I have not seen any deterioration. I think they are about ten cents each. https://photos.app.goo.gl/xgrmYMo5z1ZepBLK6

    Cruise Control?

I had the Rostra unit on my 65 Mustang for several years before I put one on my van. The advantages over the stock vacuum system are the resume function and an LED to indicate engaged. I put the set/coast and accelerate/resume on a SPDT momentary mini toggle switch on the console. When I put...

    Cruise Control?

I added factory cruise to my IDI in the early nineties. For the 2014 Pony Drive I installed the system noted above in my 65 Mustang. A few months ago I put the same system in my IDI. It is better than stock.

7.3 IDI is a turbo worth it?

I bought an 84 E350/460 in 1995. In 2005 I got an 89 E350 for it's IDI. In 2013 I added a turbo. The turbo changed the world. The black soot was gone. Mileage with the 460 was 10, with the IDI it is 15. The turbo did not change the mileage. The van weighs 9K#. It does a lot of cross...

    Oil change interval

Isn't money plus fiddle time about the price of an oil change?

    Oil change interval

Any pressure drop equals a volume drop. I have tuned the turbo feed. If the filter is going to drop more than 3.5# at change time it needs it's own feed. 2 micron, Ford automobile base, filters are available. Remote, Ford base filter mounts are available. So no need for a kit. Any...

    Analog oil pressure gauge

This is the Powerstroke forum. The old stuff used a bi-metallic strip gauge. More pressure meant less resistance, more current and more meter movement. For the later magnetic gauges, more pressure means more resistance. The early sensors were 70-10 Ohms as pressure increased. The newer are...

    Oil change interval

I would probably put a low pressure gauge across the filter. It would measure differential pressure in real time. Ideally the gauge would never move. If it does, it is because the filter is getting dirty. That is why I have a vacuum gauge after the air intake filter. And no, at the moment...
