    IP timing

I have a TACH N TIME. The bracket on the front engine cover has a tube at the zero mark, and a smaller tube 20 degrees later. I plugged the magnetic probe in the smaller tube because that is the one it fit. I did a quick check at idle. I scrolled the timing light until the dampener groove...

Felt like it lost half the engine

2001 E350 PSD Acquired in 2008 Removed fuel filter from engine. Have filters in front of and after pump on frame. Built regulated return fuel supply. 60# at regulator. Replaced flex oil lines, added crossover line. Shimmed and safety wired under valve connectors. Added pigtails and re-bundled...

    Engine oil for 7.3 idi?

I have used nothing but full synthetic since the mid seventies. When I got my IDI I first used Mobil 1 because I had it. I then went to the Walmart stuff then to Rotella T6 a few years ago. After a couple trips to SEMA asking about oil for flat tappet cams, I now use T6 in everything; no...

What others parts can swap from a gasser

Did pickups change more in the years related to this build than vans? I got an 89 E350/IDI for the engine to put in my 84 E350/460. Both radiators are about the same size, and both fit the 84 mounts, tho the bolt patterns are a bit different. I am running the gas radiator and adapted the...

    2018 Oilburners Rally

It will be faster than 2017. We did that in my 11.4K# PSD. https://photos.app.goo.gl/PAc3NFuYiKTgazik2 But, it is not a race. They try to route it on back roads thru small towns where it provides the town a parade. I call it a rolling car show/traffic jam. 2K do the whole route and maybe 8K...

    2018 Oilburners Rally

Actually, I must pass this year. We will be in Las Vegas July 10-14 for FredomFest. Maybe next year. But we decided the 84/89/93 E350 turbo IDI is going on Power Tour.

    Watch those air filters.

I put a vacuum gauge in front of the compressor intake. If that gauge ever moves, service filter.

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

The question was more like could the higher compression of a fresh engine produce more smoke? I have kinda got it to where the old was; it produces white/grey smoke with a heavy foot at low RPM, and the sound during that time tends toward what I call rattle.

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

I had a discussion with an IP and injector re-builder. Like most others he said white smoke indicates the IP should be advanced. So I advanced it and the rattle got worse. So I retarded it and the rattle is either gone or almost so. I have said that if it was a gas engine I would think it...

    Transmission pegs to hot

Two things. I have had an E4OD overheat because I over filled it. I have a real gauge. Fifty miles down the road and the trans was running hot. I stopped, drained a quart of fluid, and the temp dropped to normal. I have long added external filters to auto transmissions. I use a standard...

Felt like it lost half the engine

2001 E350 cutaway PSD Three times, a hundred miles, several days, and many stops between events. Suddenly lose power and check engine light comes on. Stop, shut off, restart, and all is well. No trouble logged. I carry a spare PCM and IDM and the issue survived replacing both. Is there...

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

I got a Kent-Moore J- 33300 Tach-N-Time. I already had a serious timing light. Everything about working on a van is awkward, including timing it. I think it is at 4 degrees BTDC at 2K RPM. I drove it a couple miles. Under acceleration there is a lot of grey smoke, and to borrow a term from...

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

I advanced the IP drive gear one tooth. I left the advance I previously got by twisting the pump. It now seems functional. It is still on the lift, it idles smooth, and is smooth up to I am guessing about 2K; I don't have a tach. And no clouds of smoke. I hope to soon have a timing...

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

Yea, right after I turn a couple offset box end wrenches into tube wrenches to get at the bottom lines on the pump. I got a new set of lines recently. Do they really need to be that stiff?

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

Yes I removed the housing with the pump. You don't get a pump, gear or housing with a rebuilt engine. And they went on gear > housing > pump.

New 93 turbo engine, lots of white smoke.

I got my 84 E350 in 1995. It came with a 460/C6. Over the next decade I swapped the C6 for an E4OD and the D70 rear for a D70 dually. In 2005 I got an 89 E350 for it's IDI. A few years ago I added a remote turbo. At that time I also had a 2001 E350 PSD. They are both 7.3, the PSD turbo...

    Fuel Sender Floats

You might consider getting rid of the whole filter assembly. Look at pics 2-4 in the album linked below. I did this a few years ago and have been very happy with it. And I did not need anybody's kit. https://goo.gl/photos/hQSWmXVQ6HsMVWzh6

    Fuel Sender Floats

I have been playing with Ford fuel senders for a few decades. I have "cut & paste" sender parts when I did not have the proper sender assembly. I have found that it is common for the float to be squeezed too tight by the arm. I have had had the arm poke holes in both brass and plastic floats...

    7.3 idi alternator swap

I have been converting all my old stuff to 3G. They can have either one or two wire regulators. With two wire you can have an "idiot light". And if you get them from eBay the seller might not know the difference.

    Cruz Control

Careful of broad generalizations. I have six vehicles that run. I have LEDs in all of them. Most have flashers that flash at the same rate with either type light. My 2001 PSD has a standard flasher and flashes about twice as fast, but I decided I prefer it, and left it that way. And my...
