If you batteries are good and strong and connections are good more then likely is the starter. Don't waste your time taking starter to parts store to bench test . On a diesel proves nothing other then it spins over. Diesel starters need to be load tested which most parts stores can't do.
It is not really a must to have, Have not looked into it at all, but not sure way a normal light would not work, power to the light and the sender provides the ground when the engine gets to hot. A good working temp gauge is as important as anything IMO
Well I am sorry if I miss understood it. Sounded like he was questioning me. And yes it was some work. but it made a truck that will heavy pull, I pull a manligt that weights 15 k behind the truck , so that and he trailer are like 18-19k .
Rock you sure about the SD being different? The back end of a 6.9 or 7.3 are all the same . Whcih would mean the trans bellhousing is the same. It would be odd for the SD to be different.
Excuse me!! I had a 4x4 gas zf5 took everything out of it and swapped gears around onto my diesel one. It is not a beginner job. So yes it was a custom build.
And if you don't think that is what I have , being you seem to know me enough to call me a liar?

With the way it is now built mine starts out at 5.72 compared to a normal diesel ,4.14 Which is pretty low I have to shift to 2nd fairly quick once get rolling.

In my 93 dually 1st is a granny because it has a wide ratio trans. When I first got the truck it had a close ratio, because I pull pretty heavy with it was terrible starting out on any grade. Rebuilt it an made it a wide ratio, works great now.

The vast majority of truck and equipment I have owned never had the safety switch. My 93 was always giving me problems so bypassed it.

Have you tried unplugging the small wire on the fender solinoid to see if it still started? Also check to see if that wire has power to it all the time . should not. other wise just have to follow the power flow.
Taking a diesel start to a parts store to test proves very little other then if it spins or not. They need to be load tested which very few parts stores can do. I have had them in the past where it was bench tested as good , but all it would do is click, put a new starter on and fired right up.
