    Idi Reman engine supplier options

Another option, if you want, is to work with this guy: https://www.msengineworks.com/ His name is Greg. He's a local machine shop, and while I had issues with him(or more than likely his workers) in the past, he currently works alone, and is a knowledgeable guy. He can also ship the motor to...

    North Idaho IDI parts

I've not got any just lying around, but I do have a complete IDIT shortblock I bought a while back - it ran, with low compression. Let me know what you are thinking(PM me), and I'll see what I can do. If we make a deal, I can pull the pistons/rods. As an added benefit, if the timing works out...

    Anyone recognize this tester?

Which you still should be able to see using the tool. You will see a major difference in resistance or voltage between a good one and a bad one. Usually a bad one is open circuit. With a modern multimeter, it won't matter, voltage or current. Does it matter if you get a "-.020mV" or a ".020mV"...

    Anyone recognize this tester?

So, basically it's just an 8-position switch box with leads. Connect each lead to one glow plug, measure resistance to ground(or mV) with a multimeter, then switch through the positions and look for differences. Different temperatures will result in different voltages(seebeck effect) and...

    Return check valve

I have had surging like that associated with air in the fuel.

    Return check valve

Which is why I said you need to install a check valve in the supply side. Fuel won't drain out of a bowl unless it can siphon; this means you need both air in the return side, and a lack of a stop on the supply side. Either of those(drawing a vacuum on the return side, or a check valve on the...

    Return check valve

The only thing I don't like about this is that it does make priming slower if you run out of fuel / get air in the line. The return has a metered orifice(small pinhole in it), so you don't lose "all the fuel pressure" - the check ball just tries to prevent drainback.

    Return check valve

It more than likely doesn't work anyhow, so yeah, you can do it. However, if you do have issues, install a new check valve into the supply line just before the fuel filter.

    Ball joint replacement blues

I've always found the hub cavity filled with grease, and when I regreased mine, I put quite a bit in there. Remember, centrifugal force should act on that grease and hopefully push it into the bearing as you are driving down the road. As for getting old grease out, a small can of gasoline or...

    Priming question

The 1/4 tank issue is that the pickup is broken inside the tank. It's common. As for leaks, it's probably the return cap under the line and not the line that's leaking. Return lines are something that are about a 10 year item. Make sure to use wheel bearing grease on the O-rings and inside the...

    Blow by question

IDIs have large ring gaps from the factory. They make a *ton* of blowby, which goes through the CDR normally and is burned. It's not a Cummins which can run a RDT and be fine; it's an IDI. Blowby isn't a sign of anything, really. Freshly rebuilt engine will produce plenty.

    Drives a mile then dies

Any filter will act as a separator, due to gravity. I'm assuming you have the stock filter on the engine; empty it. edit: When emptying this filter, refill with cheap ATF - it'll burn, has some solvent properties, and you don't have to worry about refilling the filter by cranking.

Dana 70 oil weight? (also, gaskets)

Get some Permatex 1-minute-gasket. It either comes in pressurized cans or a caulk-gun tube. The stuff is amazing - I use it for anything that needs a gasket to stay(t-case to trans, diff cover, front cover of engine etc). It says you can just put it on, install the part and immediately return...

    Tire shop: rant/question...

How about forgetting to take off the E-brake(dash brake light burned out just then) with a heavy load of hay behind me. 20 miles later, I look behind me and am making a huge cloud of smoke... because the axle seal was leaking as well. Stopped to figure it out and the oil lit on fire it was that...

    Drives a mile then dies

Empty the fuel filter/water separator. Could easily have some water in it. Engine doesn't run on water, and water or air, you'll get surging, loss of power etc.

    boost related ticking?

When really, really worn, you can hear the chuffing up through the guide. But we are talking 'destroyed guide' level of wear. Like 1/16" of clearance level.

    NOS 7.3 turbo engein

With the block not being a turbo block, the only thing you really need to worry about is getting the matching flywheel for a non-turbo spec application... Otherwise, I might check the return lines; if the hose is old and hard, replace it. If not, I'd probably pull the caps and grease the...

    blown HG?

I will say that cummins have their own problems... like head gaskets. Just replaced a set on a well taken care of '99 24v with maby 150K on it. And at stock power levels, no less! So, head gasket issues aren't exactly IDI specific. Also, just want to mention "53 block" and "KDP"...

    track bar check.

OK... ELI5: What's a track bar and how is it applicable here? Googling, I come across a bar that ties coil sprung axles in the center, so they don't go sideways out from under the truck. But you have leaf springs? Don't the leaf springs provide lateral tracking? Admittedly, I don't have...

    Tire shop: rant/question...

I know I'm in the minority here, but I absolutely always use my big dewalt impact for my lugnuts. And yes, they probably end up slightly overtorqued, but I haven't had issues with them coming loose doing that. Unlike when I was changing tires on my landlady's truck. I thought that since it was...

Hard start even with new injectors, injection pump and glow plugs...help

You might try rigging up a manual GP override button; hold it on for like 15 seconds and then crank. From past experience, really low compression motors won't pop on ether, but will fire with enough glow time. Timing being off, though, I've had that be startable with ether.

    1986 1 ton GVWR?

F-250 is a 3/4 ton truck... Not that it means anything. Your GVRW is 8600; weigh the truck empty and see what payload you have. My '93 has a GVWR of 8800, and weighs 6600 empty(with just me in it). So, I can put 2200lbs in the bed without being overweight.

    Won't shut off when hot

Which means it could be the fuel shut off solenoid literally sticking in it's bore due to crud in there. Probably time to remove the IP lid and inspect it. Alternately, try filling the fuel filter with ATF, let it run for about 30s till the ATF gets into the IP, shut it off, and wait all night...

    Wicked wheel install

I wish I could tell you, despite doing it myself. That being said, an impact really helps either way - you can just hold the wheel with a rag and hit it with the impact, no reefing needed.

    Air breather

Well, no matter what you come up with, the more air, the colder the air you can ram in = the better you'll end up.
