This is an excellently running 4-53 Detroit Diesel generator. I'm unsure of the exact military model number and vintage, but I believe it to be from the late 50's. That's based on when the 53 series was introduced, and when the branding switched from GM Diesel to Detroit Diesel...
The biggest difference in HP ratings is going to be from injectors. The truck 6V53T usually had 5A50 injectors and were usually 225hp. The 400HP marine was probably built with 5N65 or N70 injectors. They would have different specs for injector height as well, which is how timing is set. I...
No welder needed for this one. You can easily modify a 9/16” wrench with a propane plumbers torch, and a 4-1/2” angle grinder from harbor freight. You’ll spend less than you would on the “proper” tool, and you’re increasing your arsenal for other projects.
There are fewer filter options with the 6.9 filter head. No water separator drain. If it’s not leaking now, it looks like you will probably be fine as is. I have an unmolested 7.3 filter head I can sell you if you want. Just shoot me a PM.
The flywheel for a manual trans, as well as the harmonic balancer are also different for the factory turbo motors. You can bolt the v-belt crank pulley onto a turbo balancer though.

I was asking about white smoke while cranking because that would indicate fuel being sprayed, but not igniting. That would be the case if your glow plugs were not working properly, and there wasn't enough heat in the cylinders to fire. The reason I ask is because it doesn't sound like fuel...
Yeah, it’s a mixed bag sort of deal. I really was pretty happy with the way the truck turned out, but it wasn’t the ideal configuration for me. I would have rather had a SRW and 4x4. Also the truck was really pretty comfortable for what it was, but it’s not really a pleasure to drive for a 100+...
