I did post this on the IDI page as well;

Howdy folks,
My 5-42 in the ol' '87 has bit the dust. The 3-4 hub is shattered and the main shaft is broken. My question for someone smarter than me is; I have a 5-42 with a broken main shaft, I also have a 5-47 with a broken housing. Can I simply swap the main and counter shafts from the 5-47 into the case halves of the 5-42? I know the bare main shafts are the same but I would like to retain the lower gear ratio the 47 offers.

Thank you for the help!

Free bump, seeings how I got nuthing.
How does one end up with so many busted trannys?
You could do a part # search for both trannys and see if the parts carry the same #'s.
If so your good I think.
Good luck.

Clb/79',
Thanks for the ideas.

Clb, the 42 self destructedon the hi way. I simply shifted from 4th to 5th. I guess it was asking too much that day. The 47 was purchased broken as a parts doner.

79', I did look up cases on Midwest trans but different part numbers. I thought this may be because one case is stamped 5-47 and the other stamped 5-42? I did call but no answer.

I guess I could just man up and put it together and find out for myself.
