What happens when you run the tank dry?

I know, silly question. I intend to run the front tank as empty as possible before dropping it for valve 0-ring replacement. I have a manual trans, and can coast a bit. My old diesel VW would just rev right up after switchingtanks.
Does the 6.9 engine stumble and then pick up after switching, or just shut down and require roadside bleeding?

Ive run a tank dry, quickly switched to the other tank and was fine. Once it starts to surge you're as low as you're really gonna get so switch it once it does that and then drop it is my advice.

Truck will start idling spuratically. RPM's will jump around like crazy. Inlet pressure drops so the IP advances timing and raises rpms (somehow LOL).

I switch tanks, and hold it at an idle around 1200rpm's. It smooths it out and gets the lift pump to do its job.
