There seems to be good support for one of those kits in this community, and I believe it's the hypermax kit. Iirc a couple of the major guys on here are dealers. That alone is a big factor I would think just knowing who you will be dealing with if you ever need anything.

Banks is a good company too though, and their kits have proven to work as advertised. My truck came with banks so I see no reason to change haha.

Great plan to learn all you can so you're good to go :)

Yeah, I have yet to buy any major parts with the exception of a clutch kit and flywheel but as far as the turbo, I have feeling it will most likely end up being the Hypermax only because its American made and parts can be obtained without searching the planet haha! My dads old 89 had a banks, it was awesome until NR 8 CYL cracked pulling up a hill :/ oh well, I don't pull outrageous loads, just a 7 by 16 interstate cargo trailer! I agree, Banks is a good company.

That's awesome! Yeah, once I get out and start working for the railroad I wanna have between 5 and 10 acres, once the house is the way I want it, a 2 bay shop with a lift is going in :D

old nongated banks were easy to get parts for, the wastegated banks are impossible to source quickly. I have 2 here trying to find a compressor wheel. I just ordered a bigger wheel and will machine the housing then it will be easier next time.

Buy a hypermax.

Yeah, I think I am going to go with the Hypermax. I like banks but, hypermax has them slightly beat for the turbo kit haha, in my opinion. Either way, both kits improve the performance substantially.

The only knock I have seen on the hypermax kit is the design of the up pipes. They are a mile long and that will hurt your spool up. That being said, most folks won't miss that and it's minimized by wrapping the pipes. If I were buying new, I'd probably go hypermax. I'm frankensteining mine a bit so it will be interesting.

How much do you think it will hurt the spool? That is almost the most important part! Haha!

Yeah I could, I just don't have the tools or correct work environment to do something like that. No vice, no metal working equipment, stuff like that. I don't think those up pipes would effect that much, especially coming from a N/A engine, if you were used to a different then perhaps. I just like the kit because it has everything I need to do to complete the install.

I understand the want to buy new, but under $1k vs a few $1k. Lol
Plus if you have to pull it, you'll have that much more experience to be able to install it.

I've just been through the same thing banks v hypermax. I still have the engine apart now, I'm trying to source another cylinder head over here but that's another story altogether. I don't think you can go wrong with either kit. I ended buying a banks. There were a couple of reasons I went that way. The first is I have a 2WD and I didn't want to put a body lift kit on it. From what I could find out from reading, the hypermax seems to like a little more room around the firewall/ tunnel area. The second was it came with everything including exhaust. The third was, I rang around some turbo specialist repair shops over here and played the potential customer needing some help with my turbo. When I said it was a turbo without a wastegate there tended be some hesitation before they replied, no one really knew much about them. So that sealed it for me. If I was living in the states and wasn't to far from a hypermax dealer I probably would of gone down that path just because, at a later date as funds allowed I could add an intercooler etc that's made to fit a little more easily than trying to adapt something in, especially if you don't have the facility's to do so. Just to make it more difficult I really like the sound of what Mel Agnem is doing with his kit development, might be worth the wait. Good luck with it

as a general rule, when comparing a non gated to a waste gated turbo, the wastegated model will provide the quicker, whistling spool your after.
im not saying the banks will spool quicker than the h-max cus i don't have any experience with them.i can say the banks turbo is like driving n/a with more power.meaning, there is no lag you can feel under any condition that iv ever noticed.there are no press and wait and then all the sudden the thing shoots off,lag conditions with the banks.when you press,it spools and pulls just like n/a,only much, much harder of course lol.:D
again,im not saying the h-max doesn't feel the exact same way.i don't have that experience to share either way.

plus do keep in mind too im all wrapped up (which i would have done to any turbo kit i bought.)
turbo blanket + exhaust wrap.
