IME, 4x4 is only for getting back on the road.
Driving around in 4x mode makes mishaps easier.

A cheap way to avoid the pulling jolt with chains, is to put a tire in the middle.

Keep in mind recovery straps are supposed to stretch. Nature of the beast.

I have never had issue with cheap ones assuming that you realize that yu will need one rated for much more than the vehicle's weight.
