when i purchased my truck i was told the sending unit is bad but it is stuck above full would that mean it is bad or that it is just stuck, and how hard would it be to fix/replace?

My truck does the same things and I'm curious as well...

It could be bad, but it could also be a short in the wire between the sender and the guage. Any time you ground the wire from the guage it should peg the guage if it is working properly .
Try disconnecting the sender. If the guage goes to empty your sender is bad. If it stays pegged then it is either in the guage or the line between the sender and the guage.
