I am replacing the probe/sending unit on my Hypermax Turbo.
I have their combination boost/EGT gauge.

There is no power wired to this gauge, except for a wire to the light.
Will this gauge work like this; or did the previous owner hook it up wrong??

The tip of the probe is disintegrated.
2 wires go from it to the gauge.

How does it work??

How should it be hooked up??

Many thanks for information.

I wrote Hypermax and never got a response.

Pyrometers are actually relatively simple gauges. Your setup actually sounds like it was wired up correctly. The thermocouple (the probe that you said got disintegrated), when heated up, actually generates a few milivolts of electricity and sends that signal to the gauge (through the two wires that connect the thermocouple to the gauge). This is where the gauge gets its' reading from, so no external electricity is needed...except for the 12 volts to the light bulb.

Actually, you can probably just replace the thermocouple and call it good...it's a good bet that your gauge is fine. No sense spending the extra $$, eh? :)

Hope this helps some...good luck! BTW, welcome aboard!!

A pyrometer uses a thermocouple to obtain a temperature reading. A thermocouple is exactally how it sounds thermo meaning temperature and couple comes from the fact that it consists of two dissimilar metal wires coupled together. All thermocouples work by the small electrical difference created when the different metals are heated. They are rather simple just hard to believe something as simple as two different metal wires twisted together could measure temperature. So, your pyro is hooked up correctly but if the tip is disintigrated i would look into replacing the thermocouple wires and tip......the gage itself shouldnt need replaced.
