I lost 5th gear two days ago. (830 miles from home.) From what I have read, when the nut backs off the engine will race but there isn't any gear noise. When my 5th gear went, there was a grinding noise.

1) Does that sound like the splines on the shaft wore off?
2) I would be interested in hearing what fixes people here have used and why.
3) How well do the different fixes hold up?

the grinding that you are hearing is probably the nut rattling on the shaft - mine did that each time.

I just sent you a pm as I have shaft that I'm was getting ready to list on ebay tonight...

My father has had the same issue 3 times in his 97. We finally welded the nut to the shaft. We had the same issue once with the noise, and that was because the washer behind the nut had broke into two pieces. Luckily nothing was hurt.
